Will 4lb Fireline spook trout?
Others believe that the fish is not scared off by the sight of the tippet,
but by the drag that it might cause on the fly. the stiffer it is, the more likely it is that it will drag on the fly. Also the thicker it is , the more likely it will cause drag. Is Fireline very supple? There is no good answer to this controversy.... Years ago, George Harvey stuck short pieces of leader material of various diameters into beetles and dropped them off a bridge. Trout eagerly took them, no matter how thick the leader. You can find that in both of his books. vince |

If you want all the details, in George's own words, see his _Techniques of Trout Fishing and Fly Tying_, revised and augmented edition, 1990, pp. 20-21. There's a much shorter version in his more recent book, _Memories, Patterns and Tactics_, written with Dan Shields. |
