Come on guys - give us a bit more than this ! No you'll have to wait :-) Where is Dave's web-report and pictures?? Ask Dave It never used to be as quiet, is Reg still smiling? Reg NEVER smiles, he moans consistently and we wouldn't have it any other way! Did you all have a good time? No - it was bloody awful. How many did Andy bag? Well, he said one but we never saw it. Seriously though we had a great time but as usual the fishing was poor. They were DEEEEEEEEP! I think we all fished sinking lines with various monstrosities on the end, (mine fell to one of Andy's orange bombs!) Reg and Dave blanked but the rest of us managed one apiece I think. Mine was a feisty bugger that Reg and I thought would top 3 lbs the way it went at it but it ended up just over 2lbs. Nice, probably over wintered, fish. Now in the fridge awaiting consumption. Food was good as usual, Andy pigging out on his lamb chops both nights, and keeping the rest of the hotel awake all night with his snoring. Poor old Dave slept in the bunkhouse on his own waiting for some Sheila to turn up. I personally think we have two options for next year. a) Knock Brenig on the head, (pity as it's a convenient place to go to) b) Change the time of year we go there. (May/early June?) No doubt Dave will put up a web page when he has the time and Charles: I tried to send you a piccy but your address bounced. Any ideas why? Good to meet up with Charles and Alan. Maybe next year we can get a few more interested? No doubt some of the others will add to this and correct me if I'm wrong about anything :-) Cheers, Alec -- Alec Powell Watlington Oxon. UK |

Where is Dave's web-report and pictures?? It never used to be as quiet, is Reg still smiling? Did you all have a good time? How many did Andy bag? hiya - yes, sorry - since getting home I haven't had chance to sort the piccies out into the viewable/embarrasing piles....had hoped to get it done tonight, but have been dragooned into helping out at the school disco, arrrghghghhh The short version is that after a likely-looking start with overcast skies, the day turned into a sizzler, and everyone was struggling. The experts with the fish-finder reported that there were a lot of fish about - but 60 feet down.....and even Andy with his depleted uranium cored line was struggling. Still, 4 out of 6 of us caught a fish - those bounders using fast sinking lines and bright orange lures that appeared to have escaped from an 'Alien' movie. The purists (Reg & me) didn't get a touch - apart from the sun that is. Photos and the full story coming soon... cheers, Dave -- Literacy Support Software from: Xavier Educational Software Ltd School of Psychology, University of Wales Bangor http://xavier.bangor.ac.uk/ .... I opted for the tried and tested GRHE on a sinking tip for about an hour and decided, no go. Thence onward it was downhill. Me? Fishing a sinking line? The lads in my club who fish it regularly - up and back in a day with at least 8 hours fishing- have in the past recommended "pulling" flies. Of course with bright sun they fish would have been down deep. You got that right though. Let's see what next year brings:-) -- Bill Grey http://www.billboy.co.uk |

Of course with bright sun they fish would have been down deep. You got that right though. Let's see what next year brings:-) Thanks Bill for this. An interesting aside to the weekend came about tonight. Many of us have derided some of the stockies we catch when it comes to consuming them, In fact I am no great lover of large? trout for the pot. However this one caught at Brenig was one of the tastiest we have had for a long time. SWMBO baked it with a bit of garlic and capers and it was delicious. I put this down to the fact that as Brenig is so vast the fish must have ample opportunity to feed naturally and also that it was caught in "Welsh" water. Nothing like the poisonous stuff Thames Water feed us on down here! Maybe next year I'll manage a brace so I don't have to share it with her! :-) Cheers, Alec -- Alec Powell Watlington Oxon. UK |
It is very good to hear that the infamous Brenig gatherings are still
taking place, and with many of the same names cropping up. Sounds like the fishing there is not getting any easier, but as always the company sounds to be very good! I'm now back living on the mainland, having moved back from the Isle of Muck in January. With a wee bit of luck I may even get some trout fishing done this year. (I have a standing invitation to fish Loch Arkaig with a neighbour!) But we are expecting another baby in the very near future, due on 31st July! So it may be a while before I take him up on that invitation. There are plenty of hill lochs to try out in the immediate area, and several rivers with runs of both seatrout and some salmon, so I am looking forward to getting to grips with thm in the coming years. Speak to you soon, Nick Noble Now living in Ardgour! |

writes Alec, What exactly is a SINKING LINE. As a PURIST I am not familiar with the term. Tight lines, Diamonds. A SINKING LINE is a FLOATING LINE which is past its best and the owner is too bloody mean to buy a new one. A FLOATING LINE floats (believe it or not) enabling the owner( who has spent a lot of money on it) to keep his eye on it all the time he is fishing. A decent Sinking line will cost one or two small diamonds methinks! -- Bill Grey http://www.billboy.co.uk |
