I agree, pretty much, but it's a different issue: I was talking
about livelihood. I think that we all lose if people decide
to keep quiet in fear of economic ostracization.

There is a law here in Wisconsin that allows employers to fire an employee for
any reason or no reason. A guy wrote a letter to the local newspaper. It was a
vile string of racial epithets and insinuations about the local Hmongs and
Laotians. It raised a stink and a couple days later he was canned from his job
running a machine at a local factory. While I was angered by his letter I was
even more angry that someone exercising free speech could be deprived of his
livelihood. Theoretically a person could be fired for expressing any opinion
with which their emplyer disagrees. Disturbing.

actually, even in most employee-at-will, so-called right to work
states, an employee can seek recourse if fired for the exercise of a
constitutional privilege or if the termination violates some state
public policy...

Or, failing that recourse, he can take an Uzi and a sawed-off shotgun
into his former place of employment.
