:-) , yeah, I suppose it is. But the new one's for coffee, it's
the old one that gets to live on the tying bench. And besides,
the point of a gift is to get someone something they wouldn't
get for themselves.

Scroll down this page

I also got the 12" moulding puller, it's cool too, but it's
not near as nice a "gift", even if is quite a bit more practical.
I've refurbished 12 of the 32 antique double-hung windows in this
old house. This "gift" is a not so subtle hint to get to work on
the other 20. ;-)

Sounds like a VERY time consuming job. That's the price for living in an
older home with lots of character. Lots of work to keep that "character"
looking good.

And Lou and I were joking around long before you got caught up in it.
I don't recall asking for any of your assistance and am not sure what
you meant by that. The truth of the matter is that I have taken
people from ROFF to several spots that I won't name here on ROFF and
am in the process of putting together my fourth conclave on a river
that I fish quite often. I have taken people whom I have never met
to some rather nice places, given them tips on other "out of the
way" places to fish, taken them on free float trips, etc just because
they were from ROFF. I have in the past even sent emails to people
who have posted inquiries to ROFF about fishing the rivers in my
area.

Since you didn't get the hypocrisy part, I'll try to explain it to
you. You have posted trip reports about streams that you won't even
name and then accuse me of being "possessive" of the waters I fish.

Here is yet another sample post.
http://makeashorterlink.com/?U65D232F6

Why not name the river Opie? Perhaps you are a little
"possessive"?????? ;-)

Personally, I don't think you are being possessive. I imagine that
it isn't an issue of you not taking people to that creek, it is just
that you would rather not broadcast the name of the creek to ROFF and
the world. I can understand and respect that because I do the same
thing for a few spots I know. This is what the joke between Lou and
I is about. He jokes around that he doesn't need to know the name
(even though he always gets it...) and that I can't get him "lost"
enough so that he will never find the place again because he will
have the GPS coordinates. The joke during meetings and telephone
calls spilled over to ROFF and you just got caught up in an inside
joke and have made some conclusions based upon the joke. I jokingly
said that I wouldn't take him there so he then offered you his GPS
and I responded as part of the joke that I decided not to take
anybody from ROFF there. Guess you still haven't understood that it
was a joke even after I said that I was playing around with Lou.

The whole situation is rather amusing to me because it seemed that
you were getting a little touchy about it. You even became
hypocritical IMO by calling me possessive when you won't even post
the name of certain waters you fish.

Why would the yawn take you aback? All it was meant to be was a sort
of "rolling of the eyes" kind of response. It was basically meant as
"Your (fake) whine and sigh are having no affect on me."

BTW, I don't need to hide my waters, I just do it in jest too. g

And I have posted about the Madison, Gallatin, Yellowstone and
several other places in the past. As far as finding more posts, I
found several.... Unfortunately I have no idea of where you are
talking about since you didn't mention them by their real name or a
name at all in a few. You could have been "jesting" and claim that
you were talking about Upper Creek or wherever and I wouldn't know
the difference. Whatever your reasons, it is of no great concern to
me and just seemed rather amusing during the exchanges we had going.

Naw, figured that y'all were messin' with one another, that's why the whole
"yawn" and "hypocrisy" thing kinda got to me.

What kind of got to me was the insinuation that I don't take my
fellow clavesters to the good places that I know because I am too
"possessive." It is simply not true and I have paid the price for it
in the past. I had two good friends and fishing buddies get upset
when I hosted the first Madison Conclave because I took some people
over to the Beaverhead (some big secret huh?) and didn't talk to him
much or fish with him at all for about two years. He got so ****ed
when I took people at the Yellowstone Clave the following summer up
to Slough Creek (another big secret I guess) that he cut off all
communication until late this past summer. The other friend was a
little miffed that I took some people up to "the Grinder."
Thankfully nobody got miffed when I took people to the big brookie
lake during the HF clave.....

Anyway, y'all play nice out
West and I'll stick to my nice little eastern streams.

We usually place nice. Even George and the Pirate were well-behaved
and civil to each other during the HF Clave. I'll make sure to take
some pics so Jeffie can show you where I took him and was hoping to
show you. But since you aren't coming, I am sure I can talk Lou into
going so that he can send you GPS coordinates. g

Such is life, I guess this medium weren't meant for us thin skinned fellers.

This medium does sometimes make screwing around difficult since we
cannot see the nonverbal forms of communication that people usually
use when joking. It is, unfortunately, often far too easy to take
something a different way than was originally intended and little
misunderstandings like this happen. Oh well, live and learn; forgive
and forget.

Now back to putting in some more insulation in the attic....... This
old house is drafty and won't keep warm! Maybe it being two below
outside right now has something to do with it too. ;-)

what stream ya talkin' bout op? hell, ya can talk about upper's
all ya want, just don't mention @*^&%$ crik. ;-)

as far as "secret" places go.... i'll elaborate on one where the
secret is out. the catawba river tailrace yesterday suffered it's
first flyfishing TV show event. it has also received quite a bit
of media attention in the mags and state newspapers in recent
months. i receive a few calls every week asking how to fish it.
well, for starters, you need a drift boat, raft, or pontoon boat
when the generation is on. there are a few places to wade when
the generation is off but they are few. most of the river coarses
through private lands so it is a nice scenic float below the
upper 1/2 mile or so which is designated hatchery supported.

all of the river below is undesignated water and the nc fish and
game boys were pushing for a "trophy" trout designation (similar
to TN's) from the confluence of muddy creek all the way to
morganton, about 12 miles as the river flows. it appears that
designation won't happen and it will remain undesignated for the
time being.... won't know for a few months until after the public
hearings.

this is a neat experiment of sorts on this stretch of water. the
state up to a few years ago released fingerling browns into the
river to see if they would survive and grow. well, they have and
some are "trophies." recent shock studies are impressive but what
really was surprising is that they have shocked up some naturally
reproduced browns.... they had all of their fins. that is
encouraging.

what is discouraging is that the fishing can be maddening at
times as there isn't any "consistency" to the fish-catchin. i've
now floated it about a dozen times this past year and 4 or 5 of
them were skunks. yesterday was pretty good but i did a hell of
alot of casting to scare up the fish that i did manage to catch.
there are plenty of theories afloat as to why this is, i just
think it is a crap shoot now and will be for awhile.

what is really cool is the species in the river. up high is
trout. middle is trout and a few smallies. lower is trout,
smallies, some largemouth, perch, ..... and stripers that come
out of lake rhodhiss and migrate up river every summer. there are
also muskie but they are few.

personally, i'm not sure if the river needs to be designated at
this time. it will **** off the large contingent of local bait
guys and plug casters. they have been fishing the river for years
and i just don't know if it's right to take away their home
waters and their culture....
