Alas, ffing remains more on the fantasy list than actual plans for me
this year; but among the things I'd like to do are hitting the shad
run on the Susquehanna (I've missed it for two years in a row),
getting the 3-wt onto a few small streams, and maybe even getting the
bike running well enough to stop up at the Penns Creek clave for a
day, long enough to drink a lot of scotch & recover therefrom before
heading back. I might even take the rods to Maine this year.

The fall trip to Altmar is pretty well carved in stone, though my

I've noticed that when I don't fish regularly, my gear tends to
scatter. Not sure why. I have rods in three different places; I know
my 8-wt. reel is still in the trunk of my car since last October, and
the waders are still hanging up in the basement. I'm pretty sure
they're dry now. The wading boots were on top of the freezer, but I'm
not sure where they are now. On the floor next to it, I think.

Most of my fly boxes are still in the gear bag; but a few have
attempted an escape. I think there are some smallmouth flies in a
desk drawer. The shad flies might be in my workshop, I have to
check. I know there is a box of dries somewhere loose, but I can't
remember where I saw them last.

I still need to check out why the drag on one of my larger J. Ryalls
was uneven last year. It'd hold, then almost free spin once it
reached a certain threshold. I keep meaning to take it apart & clean
it; but there seems to always be something else to do.

Well, I ain't doing much fishing, but at least I'm thinking about it.

Waiting for Shad about IRS time on the Sacramento at Verona. Was on the
lower Rogue at Gold Beach last weekend, but not fishing. Was a **** off
Al Gore jet boat run up the river. They were getting some Steelheads,
but that is all spinners / lures in that part of the river. To get the
attractor down on the bottom in big currents and deeper water. All the
Rivers other than the Smith as I drove down the coast were running really
brown from all the rain, so no fishing of any kind in them.

shad should start here in two weeks...usually last until early april; then
the rock accompany and follow shad through april; and offshore, big
dolphin (mahi), tuna, wahoo, billfish (yeah, still trying) and inshore
puppy drum, flounder, blues; and mountain trout - may at penns, june in
graham county... i've not done much since october, so looking forward to
starting anew.

When the Cottonwoods cotton the shad arrive is pretty much the rule here. I
am putting together a trip to Rivers Inlet, BC for some trailer boaters in
August. So will try for some salmon on the fly and maybe rockcod then.

I've only been Shad fishing one time, and in down town Sacramento. It
was kind of a kick and maybe the only time I've really enjoyed fishing while
lined up as near as it was possible to be without tangling with LOTS of
other guys ( mainly using spin gear, if I remember ) Maybe I should
look into it more this year and make a trip ... is it wade fishing on the
Sac? Um, seems I have a vague memory of "tales of Shad" from the Corning
area ?? somewhere up near Red Bluff anyway.

Good wade fishing at Verona. Where the feather enters the Sac. There is a
huge sandbar maybe 1/2 mile wide at the entrance to the Sac. Lots of the
fly and spin guys fish from the bar. I have a boat, so anchor up in the mix
line of the Feather and Sac and use an 8 wt sinking line for the shad. You
need 8 wt not for the shad, but because every once in a while a stiper
chomps the Shad fly. I try to remember to send you an email when I get a
chance to shad fish. Which area you live in? I am in Pleasanton.

I think Shad run in the Stanislaus here in town but I've never tried to
confirm that .... Stripers do, Salmon do, Steelhead do ... why not Shad ?G
.... but it's a tough river to access and fish in many ways and populations
of all the above fish are small

Have not fished the Stanislaus in a lot of years. Have an acquaintance in
Turlock that built a very shallow running jet boat to access the Stanislaus.
Have thought of taking the sit on top kayak down river. Brings back
memories of fishing the Stanislaus and the San Joaquin as a kid with my
uncle. Farmer in Turlock area.

Other than a few Searun Cutthroat in July & August and small native
cutthroat in the upper reaches, the Yachats isn't that impressive and
access is difficult. Ten Mile Creek and Big Creek between Yachats and
Florence, or the Siuslaw River and Lake Creek east of Florence. all
have equal or significantly better fishing, better aesthetics and
considerably better access. Also if you are going to be in the area of
the dunes (dune buggy riding) there are several small dune lakes that
have decent trout fishing.
