I was there, but it's not a great place to fish, it's not even a good place to fish. Fawn Weedbed is a 2 hour hike from the nearest trailhead. Of all the fishing destinations in Yellowstone Park that require a 2 hour hike it is so far down the list of good fishing destinations that no one in their right mind would ever recommend it. And if they do recommend it, on roff, *and* they're a top-poster, well ... But the joke's on them, Choc & Jeffie hiked all the way up there and the three pix Choc posted to abpf didn't contain a single solitary fish. I assume if one of them had actually caught a fish they'd have posted its picture. see dave...you were wrong about yellowstoneken. at least he's sticking to his myth. i still can't figure out if he's even been near or seen the place because of the way he constructs his stories about it. i've been to fawn lake and it's no weedbed. go look at the pictures i posted and choc posted on abpf. it's spring fed. it doesn't dry up. there were no weeds growing anywhere above the bottom we saw along the lake shoreline or anywhere above the entire water surface. it was deep, with a severe dropoff in the bottom about 10-20 feet from shore. it has fish in it. craig matthews and steve h. of blue ribbon fly shop in west yellowstone, as well as the gardiner flyshop owner (parks?) who wrote a book containing info on the lake (and who fortenberry essentially called a liar) agree there are big brook trout caught in the lake. yellowstone's regs limit the brook trout catch in the lake ...acknowledging its fishy-ness. charlie and joe didn't carry their rods. warren and i did and we fished the lake briefly from one spot where a fish was rising consistently. we didn't catch a fish there, but we saw them rising around the lake. i'm unsure if ken is making the ridiculous claim that our failure to catch a fish during our brief attempt meant it was a bad fishing venue. if so, i know several excellent western fishermen who fished quake lake for hours without any success. i doubt ken's logic would prevail about that lake any better than it does fawn lake. warren saw several big fish...he said 16-18+ inches... in front of him in fawn lake. i saw a smaller one leap from the water after a damselfly, in fawn lake. we all saw the rises - dimpling and splashing. i've seen the lake. i've seen the fish. it's a pretty place. its apparently suitable for a family camping experience as we saw man, wife, and child coming out with full packs, presumably from a camping trip in the area, as well as a bunch of horses and 5 tents in the meadow campground. it's fortenberry that's the joke. but, then, most folks knew that before i ever took the first step on the hike to fawn lake. i guess i just wanted conclusive proof. fawn lake did it for me. what's going on now just solidifies and corroborates the direct evidence. jeff jeff |

I suppose Yellowstone Kenny doesn't enjoy being a laughingstock, but he richly deserves it. Good one, Jeff. -- Cut "to the chase" for my email address. |

And of all the fishing destinations two hours away from the trailhead that one could recommend to someone, Fawn Weedbed would rank amongst the stupidest of recommendations. -- Ken Fortenberry |

It's been mildly interesting to see your story morph, but only barely. I don't for a minute believe you were ever there, and your descriptions of what you 'saw' just prove it. -- Charlie... http://www.chocphoto.com |

says... Wasting your time, Charley. You could have caught a fish like this: http://www.crystalglen.net/Fishing/FawnLake.jpg I'd hike a couple hours to catch fish like that. Sure, but then you'd still have to hike the two hours back, so the question really becomes would you hike four hours for a fish like that. ;-) That fish didn't come from Fawn Weedbed, btw. -- Ken Fortenberry |
