Not that I disagree entirely; but I have to take issue with the blanket
assertion that common sense is in opposition to political correctness.
To be sure, some PC phrases do seem nonsensical (OBROFF: fisherpersons
vs. fishermen); but it's my overall unscientific impression that more
often than not, the two go hand in hand. Common sense, IMO, would
dictate that once a word or phrase is understood to be offensive to
many/most, discontinuation of its common usage should be considered.

Well, maybe, but for me, when words themselves start getting banned

I'd like to see that list of banned words, please.

it isn't the thin end of the wedge or starting down a slippery slope -
you're at the bottom, covered in rancid grease with the wedge driven up
your ass...

Mind it doesn't break your nose.

one of our professors here in "greenvuhl", dr. steven cerutti, has
written a just-published book, "the words of the day: the unlikely
evolution of common english"... according to him, in ancient greece, a
person who kept to himself and out of public life was referred to as an
"idiotes", by the mid-14th century, "idiot" meant anything from an
uneducated person to a feeble-minded fool.

DAMN! He's one O-O-O-LD sonofabitch! Of course, his kinfolk does make
some decent suits...

Did he happen to say anything about what Hero's thoughts on aeolipiles
and heat conversion education theories might be someone who had
hopped their ass up on a hot stove? I mean, you've got yer classical,
yer theoretical, and then, well, there's yer practical...IOW, any more
appeals to the 4th?

Couldn't find it, huh?

So, anyway, exactly when, where and by whom were these words banned, anyway?

And, aside from speeding up the process whereby actual human beings
recognize you (which, as you well know.....from the example set here in ROFF
as well as the rest of your life....always happens eventually anyhow)
precisely how have you been penalized for your use of these proscribed
words?

Well, I think maybe Kevin's use of "unfortunate choice of word" referred to
Skwala's, not yours.

No, actually I was referring to Tim's use of the word "idiotic." I
actually agree with Tim's point, I just thought he rather undermined it
by suggesting "idiotic" as a more acceptable word than "retarded", and
you don't have to dig that deep at all to find out why:

The least you could do is refer to the word I used. ;-)

NOW see how much digging it takes.

1.. Showing foolishness or stupidity.
2.. Exhibiting idiocy.
Yes, much like this thread and the one that started it...

As if idiotic wasn't an adjective from the noun Idiot.... Great argument.

Must... resist.... this... vortex.....

I'm gonna toss two cents into this and call it enough.
If you want to say that arguing on Usenet is retarded
that's one thing, but when you illustrate your argument
with the picture of a retarded human being in an attempt
to be "funny" you have crossed a line.

We return you to your regularly scheduled etymology
lesson.

I agree with that assessment and calling someone a retard, idiot, or
moron fits somewhere in between the two.
