If I were a fishing partner of yours, I'd find that vaguely
disturbing..... g

Well, I suppose someone like that probably should carry a
backup fly rod. Either that or have a doctor prescribe some
chill pills once a year. ;-)

He does, 2mg of Benzodiazepine with 2 tablespoons of Listerine and a 1/2 cup
of Johnnie Walker Red/Pepto-Bismol.

I can see having a backup fly rod back at the cabana if you're
on some deserted isle in the Bahamas, but when you're 7 miles
from the fly shop ? Not so much.

I let him know that extra rod could weigh down his backpack.

hilarious; but, as jr noted, the vagueness created by the secondary
phrase *does* give one a feeling of ...uncertainty.

wayno(i mean, fishing the headwaters of the chatooga with scotty, alone,
might now be a little problematic...)

and
that's the antithesis of fly fishing to my mind.

A rare G chance to whole-hearted agree with Ken

why not carry extra waders ...leaks happen ( more often than rods break,
ime )
and an extra hat, they blow off
and an extra reel with line ... I've fallen and bent a reel to the point it
functioned poorly even after I pounded it back into shape with rocks ... and
I've broken one fly line in 40 years while fishing and had to ( shudder)
drive to a store and buy a new one
don't forget an extra pair of boots ... if you've never had felts come loose
you haven't fished very much
and sun shades ... they break and if ya can't see ya can't fish too well
if you fall into cold water on a blustery, chilly ( can be any time of the
year in the mountain west ) day you probably want a change of clothes along
.... and people do fall in
you'll want a bunch of 'me with fish' pictures and cameras fail ... carry a
spare

I'm reminded of Rene Harrop's story of how his great pattern the "Hair
Winged Dun" was born. He was miles from his truck fishing the Firehole in
late Fall, armed only with a heavy rod and streamers. The weather changed
a bit and baetis got fish up, including one huge one ( especially by
Firehole standards). He found a EHC on his fly patch and modified it,
then reversed his 6 wt sink-tip line to make the running portion the part
that was closest to the fish. The casting quality was miserable, of
course, but 'good enough' and he landed the Firehole trout of HIS lifetime.

Show me an outdoorsman whose MOST treasured memories are not about the trips
that somehow went a little wrong and I'll show you an outdoorsman of very
limited experience.

A once a year trip should be an adventure and 'adventure' implies some
unknown and some risk. "Insure" everything to the point where the outcome
is a given and you remove a big reason for participating ... that sense of
adventure.

Ross,

after you've used your 5-weight for a while, you'll more than likely
say to yourself, "I'd like to fish for other species" - this will
determine what other rod (if any) you may want to add to your
collection - you'll go heavier if you decide on pursuing salt water
species, or lighter if you decide to lean towards a more delicate group
of fish. The Sage launch is a very nice starter rod, by the way, so if
you eventually decide that a 5-weight is the ONLY rod you require, then
I'd suggest you spend the additional dollars required for a
top-of-the-line item. I'm very partial to Sage SLT rods - but be
warned, the'll set you back approx. $600 - $700.

Long story short: risk it, that is, fish without a spare and if you
feel you're really getting into the whole world of fly fishing, then go
upscale (if you care to) - and use your Launch as a spare.

I've fished for 5 years, own 3 rods and haven't broken one - yet.

Ok, let me get this straight....you'll carry an extra camera, extra
shades, extra hat, hammered a fly-rod back into useable shape (aluminum
or steel? cause I would hate to see someone take a hammer to graphite),
extra pair of boots, extra waders with extra condoms in the pocket
(optional), and extra clothing incase you fall in the drink, hike seven
miles to your location, hike seven miles out, but not bring an extra
fly-rod?
I think I just woke up.

NO, not at all Tom, I was trying to carry the "backup" idea to the point
of being clearly absurd to make the point that you can NOT be prepared for
every possible thing that might go wrong ... so why not just accept some
risk of equipment failure as a part of the game, and relax

I don't carry ANY of the 'extras' I listed the only 'backup' I do carry
is more flies than any five fishermen really need G, tippet, and a spare
way to magnify things ( I lose my cheater glasses with some regularity and
have a spare pair of clip-ons in the back of the vest )

It would probably be different if he wore more than just the condom.
