For someone with a greatfear of flyin', you sure travel a lot above terra firma! tough to get to those far away fishing holes in a hurry, or as efficiently, otherwise. plus, it provides a good excuse for drinking in the morning hours. actually, i'm doing a bit better with the flight fright and haven't needed as much liquid courage recently...though it may simply be that, as i age, my sphincter has more important work than grasping the seat on the plane and i'm therefore not as much, uh, on edge. |

We're spending 2.46 here (10% ethanol). A 50 cent drop in prices in less than 6 weeks is really nice (but don't get used to it). Frank Reid so, it'll be, what, only 3.30 or so in the yoop? it's 2.69 hereabouts...paid 3.02 just 10 days ago. market economies are very, very strange when it comes to gas prices around here. jeff I saw $2.72 here in southeast Curdistan yesterday......lowest in several weeks. This is a bit lower than it was when John and I left here last year for the inaugural UPYERS. In fact, it's just about what the price was in Baraga, on the res, and 10-20 cents lower than everywhere else we went in the western U.P. If we pool our financial resources (which, if you think about it, are bound to be considerably more substantial than our collective wits) we should be o.k. Meanwhile, it begins to look as if we may not have to mug Frank after all. I've been tying like a madman for the past three weeks......THIS TIME, I've been telling myself, I WILL NOT arrive (after ten months prior notice) bereft of useable bugs and be reduced to rifling my friends' fly boxes while they are off in the outhouse.....um.....though I guess I WILL kinda miss the adrenaline rush. Anyway, I've been enveloped in a dense cloud of fur, feathers, yarns, floss, chenille, wire, pointy steel and whatnot for about 21 days. Sensibly, I think, I paused briefly today to swamp out the car and begin looking for the spoor of various bits of camping and fishing gear. What should present itself to my startled and decidely bemused gaze? About fifteen fly boxes that I haven't laid eyes on for the last twelve or thirteen years! Hoo boy! Even BEFORE Wayne, Bill and George arrive, we're going to be in possession of more fishooks than existed in all of Michigan (well, what would become Michigan, anyway) prior to the 16th century C.E.! Wolfgang oh, by the way, in roughly 109 hours i'll be catching my first brookie of the day (and the trip for that matter) just about the time john is trying to convince the border patrol that he IS SO an american, and you and frank are enjoying your first anal probes of the day. :) |

Good news on the flies. I had a family emergency that almost swamped
my trip. Been tying, but have a couple of other issues to deal with. Been tying, but have a couple of other issues to deal with. Do what you gotta do. We'll muddle through somehow. O.k........um.....I don't want to see the pictures. :( Wolfgang who firmly believes that national security is, as it should be, a private matter between a man and his country. |

"Frank Reid" wrote in message ups.com... I have a coworker who was born and raised in the UP. He's also a fly fisherman. He mentioned that the best fly to have in your box for this time of year would be Mickey Finns, sizes 4-10. Will start tying now. Frank Reid Well, I am definitely bringing a Mickey Finn - in fact, it's the first one I ever tied.... What 'I' have been tying is a bunch a wooly buggers for Wolfgang, he witnessed the efficacy of them at Grandfather Falls. I am also bringing a bunch of buggers that I tie for the local rivers....smallmouth. BUT - I have found them effective on large browns and steelhead. In fact, the largest fish I have ever hooked have been below the falls that I will not name anymore. I mean, I was laughing so hard that I did not even think to set the hook. Twice. Of course the largest fish I have ever caught were on the Madison but hooked?, well... It's the "Spend-a-Day Marina' boys!!! john |

I was actually putting away my tying kit last night and drowning my sorrows in a half a gallon of Rocky Road. I'll do that tonight. Tie the buggers that is. Then again, there is a bit of rocky road left and the wiff is out of town. Hmm, rocky road has nuts (protein), milk,... hell, its even got some algae in it (that's like a salad, right?). Frank Reid |
