you traverse near gatlinburg...beware. but, i've never been to elkmont
so have no real idea about travel time through the park (nice drive as i
recall).

FWIW, I drove from the log cabin on Snowbird to Elkmont one morning,
and that sounds about right. It was took just over an hour to Cherokee,
IIRC, and then you drive through the park on 441. That part can go
slowly depending on traffic and how much sightseeing you want to do, but
it's a *beautiful* drive.

In fact, it's the drive I would take to see the park even if I
wasn't going fishing, as you drive past The Chimney Tops (and the West
Prong of the Pigeon), do "The Loop" (where the road makes a full circle
over itself), go past Clingman's Dome and over Newfound Gap, and
alongside the Oconaluftee (sp?) before leaving the park and heading into
the kitschy-hell-that-is-Cherokee.

You bypass Gatlinburg, but on your way out of the campground you do
have to drive past the intersection at the Sugarlands visitor center
(where traffic from G'burg enters the park), so that can slow you down.

Sounds like a plan. Thank you, gentlemen.

along with Wayne if we can all hook up.

If I remember correctly I called you and said come to the Smoky's on this
date range and you might hook up if me? I am so devastated!

Not being intimately familiar with the area and, more specifically, with
the route from Elkmont to Robbinsville, my basic problem is that I don't
know whether it would be wiser for me to head down Friday evening or wait
till early Saturday morning. I welcome any advice or suggestions.

Sat or Sun morning would be best, Friday nite gets you into a bunch of
casino and gatlinburg dinner/theatre traffic. There are several ways to get
there from the Townsend area.

But what a lot of "get away from the crowd snobs" don't realize is the
stream that parallels the road from Gatlinburg to Cherokee is a great
brookie stream that often disappears from the road (and noise). It's worth a
stop for a while.

Hmmm ... I'll be on the TN side around that time, too. I should be
arriving on the 13th, and I have reservations at Elkmont starting on the
15th (the first day they allow reservations for the season).

Maybe we should try to hook up during that time (at the very least,
when Wolfgang arrives).

I had it in my notes to drop you an email next week. Up for Hazel on that
Thursday?

Very enjoyable. It sounds as if it was an amusing weekend.

It was, thanks.

Keep your fingers crossed for me, I got a call from a dude a few weeks which
MIGHT result in a new abode for me......in Rhinelander.

What was the Emerson Lake and Palmer song you thought of?

One male angler with two attractive female anglers-what Chuck said.

If you end up there I know a guy you have to meet. Not to mention
I'll personally guide you to some great spots on the Prairie.

Well, sure. I guess that's as good a time as any. :-) We need to
confirm when Wolfgang is getting in. It'd be nice to include him in
that trip, but I think he doesn't get in until Friday (or late Thursday?).

I'll be arriving on Sunday the 13th, if the cricks don't rise,
etc. I've got reservations at Elkmont campground on the TN side for
Wed.-Sat. morning, but I'm planning to use it as my base of operations
the whole time (they don't take reservations any earleir in the
season).

Wolfgang is supposed to arrive Thursday I think. Wayne said he'll
be arriving Wednesday (is that right, Wayne?).

It'd be way cool if we could get a nano-clave together on Friday
before I head out Saturday.
