I can't believe you'd tell him that. We all know that no
self-respecting fly angler would be caught dead using a reel that
costs less than $47.99.

The reel itself is $46. It's the self-respect that accounts for the
remaining $1.99.

who wishes all newbies were this easy to help......then we could
move on to a discussion of the best knot for attaching leader to
fly line.

That's an easy one: The Gordian Knot.

I prefer "Johnson's Improved Gordian"®.

hey, Timmay! you still got that picture?

Yeah, that's the one! :)

Newbies, take note; the diagram shows the knot in use for attaching hook to
tippet. One should hardly need to point out that in tying leader to fly
line you simply overlap the two......or tie the knot (loosely) in the end of
the fly line and then follow back through with the working end of the
leader......and you have to cinch this one up carefully.

Wolfgang
um......somebody remind me sometime to ask dicklet if this will work well as
a quick release for anchor chain, o.k.?

Tip of the day:

While you at it, leave a loop sticking out of the mess -- attachment
for a dropper.

Sometimes that knot has a loop (or two or three) and sometimes it doesn't.

Abu, Daiwa, Shimano, which is the best? They each have their pluses

money and you makes your choice! Each make of reel has it's devotees,
who swear by what they use themselves, even though sometimes they know
there are weak points, that could be improved upon. I even saw one
post to a forum, where a certain make of reel had a 'clicky' handle.
The devotee to this reel cured this problem by forcing some fishing
line into the gap to cure the problem. He then went on to say how
pleased he was with the reel.Albert.BWebmaster

THey all suck for fly fishing.wtf drug are you on? Personally I am
impressed with the sage 1600.

I'm pretty much into 'cheap' myself. I don't see the point in a $50 fly
reel - what does it really do?

Er, all make decent FFing reels and at least Abu and Daiwa make
perfectly adequate "line holder" reels that can be had for under $50USD
even with the current weak dollar. I don't know about Shimano making
inexpensive reels, but they do make some decent FFing reels (well over
$50.00, even with a record-strong dollar), as does Daiwa. I have both a
mid-to-upper range (from about 10 years ago) Daiwa and a Shimano and
while I'd not say they were "go-to" reels _for me_, they are certainly
model competitive against similar offerings from more
well-known-in-the-US makers. IIRC, Peter Charles has at least one Daiwa
reel that he holds (or at least held) in fairly high regard. AFAIK,
none of the above are manufacturer-marketed in the US. And in any case,
good ol' Albert B. can still take some caulk, carpet tacks, the reels
and his tackle and shove the whole mess up his spammin' ass...

For the Spey fisherman on a budget I would look into TiCa. You can get
a 11/12 weight cnc machined reel for $55.

You must be a preety sucky fisherman then. I have fished in Idaho and
caught 10 pound rainbows where a drag really helped. Didnt need a $500
reel, but a $100 bbs was just the ticket. Even a okuma sierra would of
been enough of a drag, but a automatic reel? Or a rim control only
reel? You would of been in bad shape.

For the time being, you should be able to get by with a $46 reel.

Much as I hate to agree with Wolfgang twice in the space of only a few
days...

....I do. Again.

I tell you, look at TiCa, $55 for a cnc machined reel from a 3 weight
all the way to a 11/12 weight.
http://www.troutlet.com/Scripts/prod...?idproduct=526 6 through 11
weight
http://www.troutlet.com/Scripts/prod...?idproduct=395 3 through 7
weight.

You might be able to find lower prices, I just saw this web site
mentioned in this thread.

What about if I get my reels from Sage on pro deal and get their $100
1600 series reels for just $45? Can I still have my self respect?

Nope. Gotta pay the buck ninety-nine. Send it to one of the ****-weasels.
Evidently, they need it.
