Settling into work and a Winter mode after returning from the San Juan.
Now's the time of year for me to daydream about next year's trips. Over
the past year or so, I've been aware of more friends and acquaintances
dying or become sidelined by illness or injury and unfortunately, this is
a trend that accelerates as we get older. This has brought to my mind
the fragility and shortness of life, health and strength. It's also
motivated me to try and put aside the "I can'ts" and make the efforts
needed to do more of the things I want to do before I'm no longer able.

Smokies, Graham, and Macon County NC in May or June. I want to go up S-bird
creek to where it is just over the ridge from the headwaters of the Tellico
River, then go over land to the Tellico. That might be a very difficult
trip, and would probably involve bushwhacking through the woods for a piece.
Been there once before, but came in from another direction that involved a
long 4-wheel drive and a locked gate. Damned hard to get to and real pretty
brookie water. Wouldn't hurt to spend a few days on other creeks in the
general area, either.

Jeffie & me went about as far up S-bird as you can go and there's a
lot of private property in that direction too. I couldn't find a way
around it. It is real pretty brookie water though, if you like your
brookies in the 3" range. ;-)

I can imagine. The Tellico up there is only about three or four feet across.
I wouldn't do it for the size of the fish as much as for the challenge of
doing it. People tell me they think I'd be nuts to go cross-country through
that terrain - and they are probably right.

IJ offers the best approach is to leave your car at Junction , then let me
drive up the Cherohala Skyway and drop you off at Hooper Bald Trailhead---
fish downhill all day !!!!! [if you know how to fish downstream ]

Yeah, I like a challenge as much as the next guy but in this case
I gotta agree with "people". ;-)

But what's a risk of sprained ankle, broken leg, rattlesnakes, sheer
drop-offs, rhodo thickets, and sheer confusion about where one is, when the
reward is a 3-inch brookie?

Starting from Hooper Bald is actually a very good idea. Spent a night on
Hooper Bald three years ago and considered walking from there down. I still
have a map with the route highlighted.

Bad weather? The temps get down to what, low 60's and no rain?

Darin :-)
