TR: Mother's Day Caddis Hatch
Went fishing with pw and Mark yesterday. Had a damn good time and
put together some pics and a TR on my web site: http://makeashorterlink.com/?S37721528 Thanks for the beautiful pics. Kristin loved them too. I was talking to the mgr of Dan Bailey's yesterday. He floated the day before us and tried to make the best of the whities. He thought he caught about 80 on dries! I think Jeff could be your new best friend g Regardless if any one knows why most the trout aren't eating on top, we sure did time that day right! Yesterday the wind was nasty (I would have let you row then for sure! g). and today it was a blinding snow storm almost all day, wind was gusting, and I think it topped 34 degrees! About a 40 degree difference than yesterday! That's living in the Rockies. I wonder what this weather is going to do to the Caddis hatch? Any way, it sure was a fun day and we need to do it again while the caddis are still here (if we can), and when the Salmon Flies arrive (if we can). The Yellowstone sure has come up a bunch today and is greener. -pw remove astericks (*) from e-mail address (use paulwilliamson at spamcop dot net) ----== Posted via Newsfeed.Com - Unlimited-Uncensored-Secure Usenet News==---- http://www.newsfeed.com The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! 100,000 Newsgroups ---= 19 East/West-Coast Specialized Servers - Total Privacy via Encryption =--- |

Thanks for the beautiful pics. Kristin loved them too. Glad you enjoyed them as much as I did. I find myself often putting down my fly rod and taking up the camera. You had the oars so I was able to get many more pictures than I usually do. I am still learning the specifics of this camera and all of its functions, but I figured out a few more "features" the day after the float that would have been useful during the float. I look forward to the next practical application. I was talking to the mgr of Dan Bailey's yesterday. He floated the day before us and tried to make the best of the whities. He thought he caught about 80 on dries! I think Jeff could be your new best friend g Hey, I don't mind whities. But it sounds like Jeff should meet Jeff Connely. He is the undisputed Rocky Mountain whitefish KING! I have no idea how many rocky mountain bones I caught, but it was up there. You saw how many I pulled out of that one hole after our float. It was an obscene display of catching..... Regardless if any one knows why most the trout aren't eating on top, we sure did time that day right! Yesterday the wind was nasty (I would have let you row then for sure! g). and today it was a blinding snow storm almost all day, wind was gusting, and I think it topped 34 degrees! About a 40 degree difference than yesterday! That's living in the Rockies. I agree. It is *still* snowing out here at my house. It may have quit in town, but being up against the mountains brings us more precip than town. To tell you the truth, I was baking the other day on the float. This change in weather is much more soothing to my Nordic roots. Plus we really can use the precip. I wonder what this weather is going to do to the Caddis hatch? My guess is that it most definitely will. The wind will drive them off the river, the snow will drop most of the already hatched and the cool weather will slow down the hatch. It is much the same as the hatch last year on the Maddy but with snow. I have a feeling that the snow will be very detrimental to the adult population that has already emerged from the river and that an entire "swarm" of them are as good as dead before having a chance to do their egg laying. I am very curious to prove my suspicions and will take a trip out to the Maddy tomorrow. Any way, it sure was a fun day and we need to do it again while the caddis are still here (if we can), and when the Salmon Flies arrive (if we can). The Yellowstone sure has come up a bunch today and is greener. The Gallatin and Yellowstone will most likely feel the effects of the recent precip much more than the lower Madison, if there is any effect. The ground on this side of the hill has been sucking up the moisture just as fast as the snow melts so there has actually been very little in terms of runoff. The hatch was just getting started over here so perhaps it will still peak after this bout of bad (actually GOOD) weather passes. Regardless, I plan on being there to find out. BTW, keep your eyes open for my key chain over at your spot where we wade fished. It still has turned up on this side of the hill. -- Warren (use troutbum_mt on either yahoo or earthlink to respond via email) |

Yesterday, Fargo ND hit 91F sometime in the afternoon, and by 10:00PM, the temp had dropped to 38F. 53 degrees in less than 12 hours. :-) That's living in ND! :-) Didn't get the blinding snow, though (although the moisture would have been *most* welcome). Well, I don't see any caddis flying around today and the river is mud and up. Oh well. Still have hopes. Just feel sorry for my neighbors relatives coming out here on the 7th to fish the Mother's Day Caddis Hatch! Silly people. It wasn't named that because of the Yellowstone! -pw remove astericks (*) from e-mail address (use paulwilliamson at spamcop dot net) ----== Posted via Newsfeed.Com - Unlimited-Uncensored-Secure Usenet News==---- http://www.newsfeed.com The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! 100,000 Newsgroups ---= 19 East/West-Coast Specialized Servers - Total Privacy via Encryption =--- |

Pretty much the same story for the Madison today. There were still a few bugs out, but very few on the water or flying around. The ones I saw were pretty much clinging to brush along the banks and didn't look very active. It made it easy to get pics of them though. :-) Towards the end of the day, a few started flying around, but it was a small percentage of what I saw along the banks and there were only a few near the water. http://home.earthlink.net/~troutbum_mt/madisoncaddis/ -- Warren (use troutbum_mt on either yahoo or earthlink to respond via email) |

damn!! if only we had such bugs on our little streams. makes me admire
the work ethic of our little trout... they'd be hedonists if bugs like yours were plentiful in our waters... jeff Warren wrote: Pretty much the same story for the Madison today.
