Spring fishing on the Cape

Caught a bunch of fish last evening on a size 20 Jong, and several of them were literally stuffed to the gills with midge larvae. Sulphurs seem to be waning, but for such a short river, there can be a big variation in hatches. I haven't been above Rte 9 in a couple weeks, but I'll bet the Sulphurs are still strong up there. Don't overlook terrestrials. I know one guy who uses only inchworms in the summer and does quite well there. Small black ants do well too. Please share. I don't believe I've ever seen that Jong Midge pattern. It's either Jong or Yong, I don't remember. Anyhow, patterns don't come much simpler. Hook: Any, size 18 and smaller. Tail: None Body: Coats & Clark medium brown all purpose sewing thread. Head: Black tying thread. Twist the sewing thread while tying to give a segmented appearance. The color of the thread can be changed to imitate the midge du jour. Sometimes I substitute a black glass bead for the head. Adding a short wing of CDC or Hare's foot turns it into an emerger. That was the key - it appears to be Yong: http://tinyurl.com/4nvkz It looks nice and simple - just the way I like 'em. Were you fishing it all the way to the bottom? -- TL, Tim ------------------------ http://css.sbcma.com/timj |

It looks nice and simple - just the way I like 'em. Were you fishing it all the way to the bottom? I tried my best, but the damn fish kept grabbing it before it had a chance to sink. G Actually, I caught most of the fish on the bottom, but a few grabbed it on the way down. Also caught a few on a small Sparkle Pupa. Water was low, but probably not for much longer, there was heavy overcast and some fog. Very few fish rising.
