: I am in the market for a new/used pontoon boat for fly fishing and running class III sometime IV rapids. My wife is interested in joining me in fly fishing some of the more interesting waters and I wanted the safest craft available with the normal caveat of I can't spend thousands on getting it. I am looking at about $500 if at all possible. Any suggestions? Chris Chris, I've got a Water Skeeter River Tamer II that comes close on price but I doubt it will take on Class IV. I also don't think I'll try any time soon! I have a very healthy fear of water that violent! Check them out at: http://www.oregonfishing.com/pontoonboats2004.asp They are listed at 975$ but on sale now for 695$. I've seen them cheaper at Fishermen's Marine in Portland. Seems like I remember a sale late last year when they got down to around 550$ there. |

As I read his website he makes one Class V single person pontoon boat as
well...I don't need that, and I would RARELY see Class III but I wouldn't made having the better boat for safety that is... Chris "Padishar Creel" wrote in message ... why the pram bow? i'd favor a more conventional bow...helps slip rocks,
trees, etc. imo... also, moves through water easier. but, i've often wondered why there wasn't something for solo use out west - something between the small pontoon and the 3 man driftboat. i just wondered about it though... while you've obviously done something about it. congrats! jeff Salmo Bytes wrote: This probably doesn't apply to you (budget $500) but it's related. I'm working on plans for a solo driftboat. ...can't believe I didn't think of this years ago. The key inspiration happened when I read that west coast steelhead guys were using 24 and 36 volt Minnkota trolling motors to hold big 17' aluminum driftboats. Trolling motors have come a long way (power wise) in the past few years. So, it occured to me a tiny, ultra-light one-man driftboat would fly, with a motor like that. With foot operated controlls, you could stand up, steer with your foot and fish all the same time. Add an achor and optional oars, for shallow or extra-heavy water and you'd really have something. I'm about 2 weeks away from the shakedown cruise. I'm excited about this. Now I can fish big water any time I want: http://montana-riverboats.com/static.../The_Idea.html |

Are you planning to use 2 or 3 batteries or are you going with a large 12-volt motor ? Two 12 volt deep-cycle batteries. I got a reconditioned 64lb thrust, foot operated motor from Cabelas, for quite a bit less than the cost of new one. This boat will be fast. I'm sure of that. 8' oars on a boat that small will fly. How well it does with the trolling motor remains to be seen. I've got my fingers crossed. |
