All that equipment stuff is cool, but the thing that made the most
difference in my flyfishing was Cox-2 inhibitors.

I always thought that was some kind of chant, you know - like "death to
tyrants".

Now with the heart
related side effects, and my recent bout with heart failure, well, I'm
f*cked. Looking forward to lots more time in my canoe from now on.

I went by the "secret spot" at Nine-Mile today and it's still frozen
solid, but I'm ready for some canoe fishing NOW, dammit!

Light weight boots are a close second. Made a huge difference in the
amount of time I could stay on the water (back when I could).

Hey, there's always the short-walk places over in my neck of the woods.
Besides, they'll come out with something else to help your knees and
you'll be back to normal in no ti... I mean, you'll be back to your
oldself in no time. ;-)

I'll also nominate $2000 faux antique bamboo rods. :-)

Apparently, they've determined that it was the Cox-2 that caused your
problem?

No, it's definitely Graves' disease (was, that is, until they nuked my
thyroid gland). However, having had some heart symptoms (*some*, heh) shuts
me off. When I was in the hospital, people were very interested that I had
taken occasional doses of Vioxx and Celebrex.

I'm not even going to bring up pain meds with the docs until late this
summer...

Sorry to hear about your wife's problem.

The ponds will be opening soon. JL went to the lower Swift yesterday and
reported no interest from the brookies. In a couple of weeks, I could see a
mid day trip to the secret spot.

It's probably a little early to be talking about it yet, but since we
just had our first above-freezing night last night, a few weeks could be
the ticket. I'll probably go on an exploratory journey next week some
time and see what things look like on the banks. If still snowy and icy,
I'll wait on the fishing. I *hate* that super-fast stream entry system.

Improvements since the 70s?

1) the rods are a little better
2) the reels are a lot better, but reels don't matter that much
3) bead head nymphs may have existed, but you didn't see them for sale
then
4) foam hoppers didn't exist at all
5) The major innovation has been the widespread popularity
and adoption of flyrod wigglers, by fly fishermen worldwide:

It's a nice tie, but don't you think "the major innovation" is a bit
over the top?

I don't know for sure, but I think that was the idea.

Could be, don't "know" Sandy well enough.

If you're nice, I might show you the secret no-4-foot-bank-easy-access
access...
