: Why on God's green Earth would rw want to fish for such itty-bitty fish as were pictured on the site you posted! Good grief Scott, if I couldn't post a site with trout the size of an Orca, I wouldn't have posted the site at all. Op --I'm with rw. Eastern trout just can't compete with their western cousins, in neither size nor personality!-- Yeah, Jay is a hell of a guide. Someday I'll have to book with him. You can learn a bunch just talking with him, but I'm sure there's much more to learn fishing with him. He was actually in our first Dog Days fly swap, tying the Burned Wing Olive at the bottom of http://www.gula.org/roffswaps/swap.php?page=DD2001 &id=4 I just took an all-day Spey Fly Workshop of his a few weeks ago, but I've never booked him for a trip. We've actually got quite a fishery in this part of the country, with a ton of variety--everything from hundred perch days to trout, to walleye, to small mouth and large mouth, to pike, pickerel, the works. I bet Smiling Joe Verdone gets in almost 300 days on the water (or ice) on a good year-- and that's all local. The Salmon River is an amazing fishery, doable in a day trip, but that's a long day trip. The whole damn town of Pulaski has a huge chunk of its economy wrapped up in the fishery. You KNOW you're in a fishing town when the sign on the diner door says "No Cleats" (and they will yell if you wear cleats!). The Lake Ontario fishery has been changing over the last decade, and the biggest Kings don't often reach thirty pounds anymore, but somehow the trib fishermen seem to get by. But, they're not "real" steelhead, though; just big migratory rainbows, so I always feel a little funny. You know-- right at that moment when you set the hook, and you know you're going to spend the next minute or three trying to decide if the hook is set in a fish or stuck in a big log on the bottom? That's when that empty feeling kicks in the hardest. -- Scott Reverse name to reply |

Wanna drool?? Check out http://www.jaypeckguides.com/gallery/fall%2006/ (That's why you book LOCAL guides!!) I see. They fish for spawners using eggs. Great sport, that. I can do the same thing ten minutes from my cabin. I caught about 15 steelhead (actual steelhead that came from the ocean) in one day that way about a week ago. It was incredibly boring and I haven't been out since. -- Cut "to the chase" for my email address. |

Well maybe you've matured in your outlook on steelhead fishing. You were having none of it a few years ago when I told you that I couldn't understand how people catching steelhead on or near the spawning beds ( as I could also do 10 min from my house if I so desired) could find it enjoyable. I guarantee that you wouldn't find it boring catching those same fish on or near the surface, 6-7 mos. earlier than they arrive in the Stanley area, when they are fresh from the ocean and haven't swum 400+ more miles over 6-8 dams without eating since they left the salt. Yeah, that pretty well describes the only midwestern steelheading I've ever done. Except the eggs, I didn't stoop so low as to use glo bugs insisting instead on a stonefly nymph. Pretty much the same thing though, sling a bunch of lead and a nymph through the spawning bed and when the fish performs his housekeeping duties (they don't actually eat anything) you set the hook. Midwestern steelheading was a one and done fly fishing experience for me. -- Ken Fortenberry |

If that's not working, I'll probably put on a globug just to hook a fish or two, and then go back to other methods. -- Scott Reverse name to reply |
