It's always bothered me that people would choose not
to do business with someone because of a difference
in political viewpoint.

I'm having trouble making sense of that. Anyone who is free to speak out
must expect others to be free to speak out in opposition, including saying,
"I am not going to business with you." Undoubtedly, politics, economics
and religion are closely tied; and refusing to patronize a business with an
avowed political or religious position opposite to one's own seems perfectly
reasonable to me.

I'm mostly on Greg's side here. I do agree that there can be extreme
cases, but for the most part, the only way a heterogeneous society
like ours works is through tolerance of differences. The logical
conclusion of refusing to interact with those who have differences
in the Big 3 that you mention would end up leaving each of us standing
by ourselves. Unfortunately I do see our society heading towards
self-balkanization. Not a good thing, IMO. Also IMO both extremes
on the political spectrum are just as intolerant as the other, but
IMO the left tends to not admit it as much.

Rather a roundabout way of letting one's political leanings
inadvertently slip.

I have no problem with interaction, and I think in general our society does
relatively well at allowing tolerance, discourse, and debate among disparate
viewpoints, both in the macro arena of the media as well as among
individuals on the street. I think it's a bit much to ask, however, that
that tolerance extend to financial support of positions in active opposition
to our own. If a man/business actively advocates a position whose end
result is to diminish my freedoms, I would be an idiot if I gave them my
money to help accomplish that goal. I don't think it has anything to do
with tolerance. I'll tolerate them, talk with them, fish with them, even
share a beer with them; but I won't support them financially.

Outfitters would happily slit each other's throats and devour their
competitors children if it meant customers. Cutthroat doesn't just
describe the fish you know.

Yeah, it probably looks like that to tourists such as yourself..... Oh wait,
you lived out here for a summer and then were the camp cook for an outfitter
and so know best. I forgot how knowledgeable you are on the subject.

It would be in pw's best interest if no one ever knew a thing
about his politics, but having opened his stupid yap here he has
informed some 3,000 or so fly fishermen around the world that he's
a blithering, dittohead idiot. I would never intentionally hire a
blithering, dittohead idiot, and I am not alone in that, although
that makes for some pretty slim pickens in Montana.

So? You expose your politics every time I check ROFF. Personally, I doubt I
would ever take a client like YOU knowingly. No sense in having a miserable
day on a river with some dip****. But I seem to tolerate you for whatever
reason there may be.

I said I wouldn't HIRE a blithering, dittohead idiot. Never said I
wouldn't fish with one. ;-)

Hell, given the number of friends you have, it is surprising that anyone at all
will fish with you. In your situation, I guess you can't be too picky and so
any company at all is good company..... What sort of idiot would ever fish with
you?!?!?! Oh, wait a sec...... ;-)

Hell if the guy had just said "I like Rush" or some such I wouldn't have given
it a second thought. But the "commie asshole" thing just brought to mind the
late night phone calls my folks would get when I'd publish one of my anti-war
editorials in the high school newspaper these many yars ago. At least he left
off the death threats. That must count for something.

A friend of mine spent a day on the NY Salmon River
with a guide who very much sounds like he could be
"PW"s soul mate and was very verbal about it. That
day bothered him enough that he hasn't wanted to go
out with a guide since. One of the main problems, of
course, was that he was captive to someone he was
paying for something he would have walked away
from on the street.
