MY weakness, not an implied weakness of the style of fishing There's something very rewarding to me in fishing a "probable lie" and catching a fish -- something that goes beyond the rewards of sight fishing. In this sense, seeing the fish is too easy. Seeing a lie and just KNOWING that there's a fish, and then catching the fish, or at least getting a take, is sublime. I had such an experience last summer while hiking/camping/fishing with my kids. We returned from a nice hike up to an overlook, one that I was really proud of the girls for completing as well as they did. The trailhead is at a nice little PA mountain creek, one which I know pretty well but had never fished. It being a warm day the girls wanted to "swim" in the creek. I knew they wouldn't get wet past their ankles once they went in, so rigged up a 3 weight to enjoy myself while they played. We got to the creek and I pointed to a nice riffle along the stream bank and said to my oldest "that looks like a place a trout would like, doesn't it?" Casted a parachute Adams to the top of the run and *bam* a lovely 8 inch brookie. Had both of us smiling on that one! I look forward to returning next summer and letting the girls have a go at casting for brookies. Bill |
