I love it because on those frigid weekends when I can't take the baby
outside, we can go to Cabela's, get out of the cold while getting out
of the house and buy a few shotgun shells and a few fly hooks. The
place is kid-friendly (not as good as Ikea, but pretty good).

I've been to Ikea's once, when they opened the new story in Palo Alto, CA
....thought we were at a daycare center.

That store's actually in East Palo Alto, which is a considerably
different type of town. I'm not a fan of big-box stores in general, but
I think that shopping complex (Ikea's, Home Depot, etc.) supplied a lot
of employment for the largely poor black community of East Palo Alto.

The Home Depot parking lot is also the place of choice for finding cheap
illegal Mexican labor. (I don't, but a lot of contractors do.)

How come it is that folks want to do business with the small local

My sudden distaste for Cabelas has little to do with their success.
It was because of their success (they offered everything for sale
all in one place) I used to shop there.

I don't like what they've been doing with Ranches in Montana.
I don't like what I've heard about bullying local governments into
providing tax breaks not available to other smaller retailers.
I really don't like what I've heard about aggressive support
for Bush and Cheney. Last year, while driving to Chicago,
I went hundreds of miles out of my way in order to stop at
the Cabalas headquarters. It was fun--a little like a good-ol-boy
disneyland.

What I've learned since then now ends that relationship.

Hey, to each their own, but I guess I don't see the rationale in ending
what was a satisfactory relationship_for you_ based on what US political
candidate(s)/office holder(s) you _think_ the founder(s) and/or BOD
and/or management support at any given moment. I'd suspect that like
most sensible large corporations, "they" will support, at least in part,
whoever is in office at the moment. Plus, it's not as if they are
selling blood diamonds or Cuban cigars or French-from-France fries or
something...

HTH,
R
....plus, I'd offer that whoever some support at any given large company,
others at the same company will support someone else, so you're pretty
screwed if you're going to use such as criteria...

That marsh was a favored place of mine. I owned a wonderful little

we came upon a family of Mallards. Momma duck quacked and played crippled,
babies dived and hid. Then we hid to see what happened and Mom quacked
her kid's back together. It had all been so cute I stood up to encourage
a repeat performance. Momma duck quacked and played crippled, babies
dived and a HUGE swirl erupted in the area. A couple of the babies
never returned this time :-( and I assume they were a meal for a big

I don't know what happened to your EPA marsh, but a considerable amount
of progress is being made in restoring the huge Cargill salt ponds
around the SF Bay to tidal marsh:

Cool !

I've hunted ducks in the Chesapeake Bay, The San Francisco Bay, and many
many places in between. Some of the most amazing concentrations of
waterfowl I've seen where on the SF Bay and the salt ponds lining it.

I remember one day laying in my boat, surrounded by decoys, near where
Alviso Slough joins the bay proper. A huge, extremely noisy, jet took
off at Moffit ??? ( whatever that military airport is/ was ) and I set up
to see what kind of plane could make such a roar. It proved to be an
incredible flock of ducks and geese, disturbed by a boat so far away I had
to use binoulars to see the boat ... i.e. LOTS of ducks G

Iwas caught in a storm and came real close to dying from exposure out there
one time, too. Another strory for another day .... when I have use of BOTH
pecking fingers. It's difficult to understand just how remote it can be
out there, in Winter, just a few miles from a major population center.

Grocery or $2.97 at Walmart, I'm saving _MY_ money and buying from
Walmart. Why should anyone feel guilty about that?

As in most similar threads, my position is in the middle somewhere.

I buy ONE product from Cabela's and have been doing so for years, a Supplex
shirt that is great in hot weather, I own a bunch of 'em.

I have not found another such shirt that functions as well, let alone for
the price ( 1/3 the SIMMS or Patagonia efforts, for instance )

I don't feel 'guilty' for those purchases, ... however, if I find a
substitute at a more truly outdoorsman friendly outlet I WILL change in a
heartbeat

BUT

I avoid others at Cabela's made just to save a few cents. It has to do
with long term vs short term benefit. If I provide some of the money that
is used to lock me out of someplace in Montana, the "savings" is an
illusion, as real cost is measured not just in dollars. Same thing
applies to companies that support(ed) Bush and Thugs ... "save a few bucks,
help ruin the country for your kids," is not an intelligent buying decision.

Larry L

( who thinks that, at this point, still supporting Bush is clear proof of
weak-mindedness. In our culture, with all it's media, it would be nearly
impossible to still be that "ignorant" unless one simply lacked normal
abilities to learn.

It shouldn't surprise us that 30% of the people are way below average in
brain power, but I still find it hard to believe. )

The story is Cableas is buying up land and hunting and fishing rights
from ranchers in Montana. The average fisherman will loose access to
places they have hunted and fished for years.
It doen't supprize me, Cabelas are were big supporters of Cheny and
the Bu****es and prbably their plan to privatize the national forest
and othere public lands.

Without comment, from that same article: "Last week, Cabela's Vice President
Mike Callahan, a former Montanan, showed up at the Montana Fish, Wildlife
and Parks Commission meeting with a $50,000 check and a pledge for another
$60,000 over five years to support the state's land-access programs.
Callahan said the company will change how it markets Montana. Under new
policies, Cabela's will not advertise the prospect of subdividing land in
Montana and will avoid undermining existing Block Management contracts, he
said. The sportsmen apparently were heard."

Dave you are absolutely right!

Take this morning for instance...I read my ROFF, my newspaper, did the
crossword and fooled around as long as I could. Brought out a doobie and
fired that mother up! Dusted, vacuumed, took the vacuum apart and cleaned
it good. Folded laundry, did the dishes and cleaned the kitchen floor.

It seemed like I was forever just picking up after people but I finally got
the house squared away. So I'll take a break and take the dog outside while
I pick up limbs and run the street litter route.

....now if I'd cracked a bottle or a couple of beers, I'd a sat on my but,
escaped all day and not got a damned thing done!

Yep, loud and clear - they don't want anyone interfering with their
taxpayer-funded hunting "rights"...

IMO, screw 'em - if they want hunting rights on private lands, let them
lease it and pay for it out of their own pockets.
