There are some very sick people in society whose depredations stop only with their breath. And some others who walk freely like normal people only because it is illegal to kill them. In and out of prison they destroy lives and kill. They are mixed with thieves and such, who they rule and devour. Except for the aforementioned folk, I agree with you and Brother Martin completely. This one still works EVERY time. maybe hire some new writers. To do what? Who would consult you for *anything*, including chestnuts. Well, thus far, 5 participants in this group have placed orders for chestnuts and 3 more have privately asked for information. I'm not sure how many others have taken part in discussions here.....maybe half a dozen, I'd guess. Outside of ROFF and its adherents there's probably 20 or so. Call it 35-40 altogether. So much for chestnuts. I'm also frequently consulted about books. No idea how many people have asked, but it's been going on for roughly 40 years.....call several hundred. And then there's cooking, rollerblading, backpacking, flyfishing, deck and gazebo construction, language, tool sharpening, and a host of other topics that I'll take the liberty of lumping under the rubric of general knowledge. Take them all together.....I don't know....a few thousand? Dave moron. g. |

This is an intriguing and perhaps (too soon to tell for certain) edifying chain of events. I know many people adamantly opposed to capital punishment for a variety of practical, moral, religious and other reasons. Thus far I haven't heard a peep from any of them decrying this particular assassination which (it should hardly be necessary to note) was carried out without anything resembling due process, let alone a fair and timely trial by a jury of peers. Instead, we find nearly universal jubilation over the result and fulsome praise for the perpetrators. Not that I disagree with the decision taken to eliminate this particular piece of ****.....but I recall that a few years ago a suggestion to offer a reward for the head of the monster du jour of that day was met with nearly universal disdain and opprobrium. The bottom line is that deeply held convictions, in America at least (I wouldn't know, but I suspect the same is true elsewhere), appear to be about as firm and dependable as campaign promises. giles who suspects that brother martin, looking down from on high, is probably glad that he doesn't have to weigh in on this one. |

That's all well said and well intentioned. Still, the world spins a little easier while the ******* is sleeping with the fishes. Well, dead is certainly where he belongs.....but I don't think that has a profound effect on the rotation of the planet around its axis. I mean, let's face it, aside from notoriety for past high crimes and misdemeanors Bin Laden had become pretty much an embarrassing irrelevancy in recent years.....a fact certainly not lost on the high powered analysts whose input was certainly sought prior to giving the go-ahead for the recently completed interdiction. Bin Laden was, to put it bluntly, a one hit wonder who had the good luck to peddle a particular flavor of insanity at just the right time and to just the right crowd to get noticed. The world, as anyone who has taken more than a cursory glance at the "Middle-East" in the last year or so will have noticed, has turned. Things are changing. giles who, fees be damned, would have liked to be the negotiator who brokered the deal between bin laden and the white house over the terms of his demise.......just for the sheer fun of it. :) |

But only a few. I was surprised that even the hosts of the regular shows (whose normal programming had, not surprisingly, been preempted) were caught up in the widespread jubilation, apparently insensitive to the fact that in all likelihood people whose only crime was being related to or otherwise in close proximity to Bin Laden died. Moreover, pretty much everyone I heard (the lone exception being the brother of a passenger on the plane that went down in Pennsylvania) bleated some banality or other about justice having been done. Justice would appear to be more capriciously malleable than it is presented to be in high school civics classes. giles who would have done things differently. |

well ****, forty...well done. that's as close to the truth of the matter as it gets for me. thank you. i thought the dancing in the streets and chanting to be eerie and repugnant...i recall seeing similar behavior by some muslims following 9/11, following the killing of americans in iraq, and after a number of other incidents they judged worthy of such conduct. it was a disturbing sight. i'll lose no sleep over the death of bin laden, but i'll not celebrate anyone's killing, and i don't like seeing others do it - here or there. jeff On 5/2/2011 10:30 PM, Ken Fortenberry wrote: For the past two or so years, Americans have been told they are too aggresive, too arrogant, too rich, too selfish. Our CIC has appologized to countless countries for our "mistakes", even bowing to a Muslim king. The American people have had little to celebrate since 9/11. They awake each morning to find that gas prices have gone up two more cents/gallon, their house is worth less, their dollar is weaker, and the national debt has continued its skyrocketing ride. They are told that the USA will be playing second fiddle to China in just a few years. We are involved in a helpless war with no end in sight, while losing long time friends (Egypt, France, Germany, et al). To have dead the pos responsible for killing 10s of thousand of people around the world is reason to celebrate. UBL will go down in history with the likes of Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, et al. While I am not in favor of the death penalty, I applaud the death of this horrible man. He deserved what he got. Hear hear! Oh, yeah. Almost forgot: **** Fortenberry. I imagine he thinks the Seal Team a bunch of cowards. Dave |
