Now's the time of year for me to daydream about next year's trips. Over

Geez, you've been back for what, a week, and already daydreaming?!? :-)

BTW, looks like you landed a couple of really nice bows on the SJ.
(and thanks everyone for the pics. Water looked even lower and murkier
than it was in Oct).

needed to do more of the things I want to do before I'm no longer able.

In 2004 my "main" trip will be a hunting trip with my brother and
my Dad, for exactly that reason (in regards to my Dad, not me).

But...a recent trip report from some friends down here got me
wanting to try a trip to the Green River, when you can fish cicadas,

And, as DaveL said, God willing,

Jon.

Bad weather? The temps get down to what, low 60's and no rain?

Shows what you know, Darin. In a statistically significant number of

years,
it has rained in San Diego County in either February or March. The rain

has,
on occasion, been accompanied by nighttime temperatures BELOW 50F.

Under
such circumstances, we locals have learned to just hunker down and

bravely
bear the brunt of old man winter's tour de force.

Dude!

In a statistically significant number of years,

It rained once about ten years ago. The ground stayed wet for a few hours.

The rain has,
on occasion, been accompanied by nighttime temperatures BELOW 50F.

If we hold an ice cube to the thermometer, the red stuff goes down.

Under
such circumstances, we locals have learned to just hunker down and

Whoa, dude. Let's break out the windbreakers and wine.

Care to share your daydreams?

Boy, this is where I came in. I've actually visited ROFF very briefly
several times, starting in 95 or 96. But, it was about X-mas last year, my
time greatly devalued by retirement, that I had enough time to waste some
here regularlyg. I came hoping to find suggestions on places to spend my
retirement years, maybe even a buddy or two to share those places with,
occasionally ...

Next year??? ... the plans so far

Jan .... the only time when the river 5 miles from home offers anything that
appeals to me

mid April - mid May ... Dillon .... Poindexter, Ruby, sections of the Big
Hole, maybe that lake where
the Beaverhead starts as it "ices out" .... I have friends in the Twin
Bridges area, and Wise River, so some visiting, too

mid May to early June .... Ashton ..... Henry's Fork from warm river down
to
St Anthony

June ....... near WJellystone ... Firehole, Gibbon and
Madison in the Park, some HFork in last chance area and ranch,
some Madison in Madison Valley, a day here and there on the Gallatin etc
June can be blown out in many western places not real high up or dam
controlled ... I prefer high up

July ... to be decided but probably a "here and there" time ... Missouri,
Teton River, maybe Missoula area .. .. maybe ....? tends to
be a good month many places, thus a lot of choices,

August ... depends on how healthy Silver Creek is this year ... I love
Tricos and I love Silver
... if the creek has made a good comeback ... I'll be
found in Hayspur
if not, ...maybe back home to work some ... different meaning
to "Summer dog days" I have some nice gun dogs I'm training that I will
have to
sell to pay for the above

Sept depends on whether I'm feeling burnt out on fishing and have sold the
dogs. I've never fished the Bighorn and I need to "fit it in" for a
couple weeks
sometime ... maybe Sept?

Many of these places, especially Silver Creek and HFork, I've fished often
and over a 30 year period. Those two in particular were in the worst
condition I've ever seen them last year. I'm not alone in that opinion, I
just got my X-mas card from Henry Fork Foundation and the cover letter
mentions that last summer was the worst in memory .... Silver has been so
poor the last two years it makes me nearly cry

Like last year, I'm open to suggestions on western waters to try ... the
Bow? don't think I've ever fished a day in Colorado, although I lived in
C. Springs a few months ? Wyoming? I have a bad memory of being run out of
Wyoming by the police, but maybe? Anyway ... I'm open to suggestions

..... although I find more each year I enjoy going
back to beloved spots
more than I seek the adventure of new ones

Probably not, Tom, but thank you for the kind thought. I'd like to hit the
Rapid before the hatches and try streamers and nymphs. But, who knows, I may
take a pre-clave trip to Penns. Love the place, but am very wary of the
weather ruining it.

Me too. Tom, who's in charge of the weather this year?

A smattering each of old, new, borrowed and blue.

The Wisconsin Trout Opener in March, the Minnesota Trout Opener
in April, Penn's in May, the Smokies in June, bluegill close to
home in July and August, Cooke City, Montana in September and a
canoe trip in northern Ontario for October.

Good lord willin' and the crick don't rise. ;-)

Sounds like a good year to me.

However, I thought you were the one that said that in September in
Montana, the dry fly fishing sucked (and we know that's the only the
type you do)and it's likely to snow several feet?

I fished the Bighorn twice. The first time was a number of years ago. I
didn't have a boat and wading access isn't the best. It was in the
height of the season and VERY crowded in the places I fished. I also
thought it was butt ugly. I felt I wouldn't go back.

BUT I went this past Sept. with a group from ROFF. I tried to keep my
first experience from clouding my judgment. And it was GREAT! The black
caddis hatch was HEAVY and brought fish up from ten feet of water to
cruise around several inches under the surface chasing nymphs and taking
the occasional bug on the surface.

Snoop is going to keep tabs on the hatch next year and I do plan on
hitting it again. Think you'd like it, don't know how you wouldn't.

It can be tough without a boat, but I saw a few folks doing it at the 8 (?)
mile take out with some success. You don't really need a drift boat; I saw
alluminum row boats, a canoe, and several pontoon thingys. There are a number
of places to wade/fish.

I'd almost forgetten how much fun I had there last August. Think I will have
to cancel something to make it back there in 04.

I said there was a 50/50 chance that the kick-ass dry fly fishing would
be done for the season during the third full week of September at the
higher elevations in Montana. I still say that.

But don't worry Willi, I plan to be back here in Urbana before the
third full week of September. My Cooke City trip, if I can make it, is
planned for the week after Labor Day. The dry fly fishing might not be
kick-ass, but that's the price I pay to avoid the teeming hordes.
