In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields

In London, it was not just the older members of the population wearing
poppies, it was young and old alike.

Here is what the Westminster Abbey close looked like on Friday. The red on
the wreaths and crosses are poppies:

I was in the UK for the 50th Anniversary of VE and VJ day in 95. The
Lancaster "poppy bombing" was awesome.

I wonder what percentage of our population still knows what they are and
what they symbolize.

The vast majority probably know that it's a flower of some sort......hey,
heroine has to come from SOME place, eh? In all likelihood, fewer are aware
that it is the internationally recognized symbo of your hobby........dead
people.

Poppies remind me of my Grandmother. I don't know if there was some
connection to to her homeland, Switzerland, but she grew lots of those
bright red-orange poppies. When I go back to the old homestead in the
summer there a still lots of poppies blooming in her old garden,
decedents of her original poppies. They make me feel good.
