wrote Are you serious?! First things first - I don't care what anyone else responds, I'm dead serious, I mean exactly what I ask and I'm honestly asking: "Gone fishing" is, for me, a loose way to describe a lifestyle. It is built around time enjoying natural things and places I love, the fishing is just an excuse, really. I have only average interest in "fishing" but I have a deep passion for "gone fishing." BUT, ... for your math calculations, I now spend some time each of 100 to 150 days each year trying to catch fish with fly tackle. I've done this for about the last 6 years since I semi-retired. No, I don't fish dawn to dusk, ... that is for the once a year ...on vacation .... guys. I've fly fished, exclusively, since 1971 and probably well more than 'average' that whole 35+ years, since I've traveled and camped near trout streams much of that time, even though I was "on business." ( I first discovered and fished Silver Creek, Flat Creek, Fall River, the Williamson, the Rogue, and many others while "on business" ) I'm trying to increase the number of days/ year I'm "gone fishing" via an annual patagonia trip ... guess I'm not bored :-) I'm still waiting to, totally, "get beyond wind knots" .... good luck G - I'd be a pro who could do it in my sleep "totally" ... it's there in the middle of my sentence where you can just skip by it G Find me a fly fisher that is "totally" beyond wind knots, I'd like to meet him/her ... I've met a lot and I ain't met that one yet. Oh, And, Ah, Your average post would seem to confirm that "doing it in your sleep" thing you mention :-) |

I'm still waiting to, totally, "get beyond wind knots" .... good luck G - I'd be a pro who could do it in my sleep "totally" ... it's there in the middle of my sentence where you can just skip by it G Please don't "creatively edit" and expect a reasonable reply. I didn't comment directly about pros and wind knots and/or lack thereof. You seem to disparage your abilities fairly often, and it surprised me that someone who fished that much would not be more adept at it. OTOH, as you've explained, you don't take it quite as seriously as the first post to which I replied seemed to indicate. And thanks for the (fairly) straightforward answer. Find me a fly fisher that is "totally" beyond wind knots, I'd like to meet him/her ... I've met a lot and I ain't met that one yet. Oh, And, Ah, Your average post would seem to confirm that "doing it in your sleep" thing you mention :-) Well, like I said, you do it long enough, it becomes about like that... Seriously, though, I read and reply on ROFF for apparently the same reasons you FF - entertainment. I'm not trying to prove anything, either literally or figuratively, and nothing anyone might say on a NG could or would really affect me all that much, so I just have fun with all, and hope others look at the same way. If not, that's their problem, not mine. IIRC, you tend to fish alone (or at least not in a club, etc.) more than in groups whereas I tend to fish, hunt, sail, boat, etc. in clubs/groups, with 10-20 or more members, and so, I'm sure the way those tend to work spills over onto other "sports-related" stuff like ROFF - lots of admittedly-juvenile locker room-type BS. If you were into organized sports as a kid, even if you've not been a regular around a hunt club campfire, on a SW fishing team, in a sailing club, etc., then you know what I mean. TC, R |

wrote You seem to disparage your abilities fairly often, and it surprised me that someone who fished that much would not be more adept at it. I take fly fishing seriously enough to be bothered by those that take it too seriously. I tend to underplay my abilities, preferring to come across as incompetent than as a braggart. But facts is facts. I throw wind knots after nearly 40 years ... it's a fact MY approach to ROFF posting ( about myself ) consists of trying to make sure what I say is true .... BUT, also intentionally making absolutely no effort to tell all the truth, actually intentionally leaving gaps in the truth told. |

I take fly fishing seriously enough to be bothered by those that take it too seriously. I tend to underplay my abilities, preferring to come across as incompetent than as a braggart. But facts is facts. I throw wind knots after nearly 40 years ... it's a fact Well, as you might have noticed, I take very few things around here very seriously...which is not to say I don't "care" about things (although, to be sure, there are those things, too...) but rather, keep them in what I feel is a proper perspective. That said, I guess I see no reason to over- or under-play one's abilities - they are what they are. IOW, if you simply said in a germane response, "Here's my experience...," I don't think anyone with sense would say, "HEY! You're just bragging!" OTOH, if you were to start berating anyone and everyone who disagreed with you and made grand claims about worldwide reverence on all matter piscatorial...well, I'm sure you know about who...er, what, dammit, what, I am speaking. Put simply - IMO, don't worry about it, lest it seem like false modesty. MY approach to ROFF posting ( about myself ) consists of trying to make sure what I say is true .... BUT, also intentionally making absolutely no effort to tell all the truth, actually intentionally leaving gaps in the truth told. My approach is that I post whatever might pop into my head, and if readers can't determine what's pure shtick and what isn't, well...and if some are convinced of things that, um, well, lead to amusement, I'd be a real spoilsport to try to convince someone of the error of something that they seem absolutely intent on believing...
