I'd love to see every father and grandfather look into the eyes of their kids and say "I'm passing on the bills for my lifestyle onto you". Cause that's what we're doing. I did that years ago. But, they will also be taken care of. My mother lived to be 89 and drew SS for 25 years or so. She got back in five months all that she and my father had paid. Was that fair or selfish? In my lifetime every generation as done better than the one that came before it. When I was 50, I made more in a week than my father made in two months at the same age. My children at age 36 and 41 make more money than I did at that age, and live in better homes and have a better life style. I don't see any change in the status quo. |

The problem is, deficit spending is no longer just a trough, it is the norm, for what, 40 years now? (Apart from the couple of years of accidental windfall from the dot-com ponzi scheme). I remember the news announcing that, during Reagan's tenure, the US went from the largest creditor nation to the largest debtor one. Of course, that's one of those first-derivative things: even though we were a creditor nation we might have been carrying a large debt. But once we started borrowing more than we were lending, we really started loading up on our debt. The budget deficit does bother me. Me too. But what's worse to me is that everyone talks about the deficit, but you hardly ever hear anyone talking about the DEBT, the total accumulation of all the deficits. http://www.uwsa.com/uwsa-usdebt.html says it is $25K per citizen, and that is HUGE. The numbers behind Willi's complaint about the interest are big, too. More than $1000 per year per citizen just to pay the interest. Yowza. On the other hand, I have heard it put that the guy with the most toys probably carries the most debt. Guys like me who don't buy anything until I have the cash (except my house) tend to have a lot crappier things than the guy who carries millions in debt. And those guys have no plans whatsoever to completely pay off their houses, cars and boats. I know that there are responsible ways to carry debt, and there are foolish ways to do it. I'm not as concerned about the debt per se as I am about how responsible we may or may not be in how we are carrying it. If the debt is to the American public, as I have heard claimed, then some people who have loaned money to the government are gonna get stiffed some day. On the other hand, if the debt is to the Fed or some other entity that won't just let it go, then the Government is going to have to cut back on programs, lots of them, and sell off public lands in order to make some payments. Thats bad enough, but what a sin if those are just to cover interest payments! --riverman |
