It left me with the impression that poppies aren't common in the Buffalo
area. Peter My recall is that they were prevalent in my youth in the Midwest and began to vanish from cities during the Vietnam War. Small towns with active VFW chapters are the resource. http://www.vfw4250.homestead.com/buddy_poppy.html provides a brief history. I had not heard of the Franco-American Children's League. I wonder if they were responsible for the truly insipid Franco-American canned spaghetti that I was fed as a child. -- Stev Lenon 91B20 '68-'69 When the dawn came up like thunder http://web.tampabay.rr.com/stevglo/i...age92kword.htm |

"Russell D." wrote in message ... Poppies remind me of my Grandmother. I don't know if there was some connection to to her homeland, Switzerland, but she grew lots of those bright red-orange poppies. When I go back to the old homestead in the summer there a still lots of poppies blooming in her old garden, decedents of her original poppies. My mother used to grow them in her garden too. I'd forgotten about them till you reminded me just now. Oddly, they are the only flowers she grew that I have vivid memories of........except for the nasty potted geraniums that used to sit on nightstand beside my bed when I was a child. They make me feel good. That's why the feds watch keep a close eye on them......and you. :) Wolfgang |

What they should have done.......and didn't.......was smoke the butchers.....and here you are, still wallowing in death.......and picking up great dripping and reeking handfuls and smearing it all over yourselves and anyone else in reach. Wolfgang helluva legacy for honorable men to leave their children and grandchildren......those that survive......ainna? :) |

helluva legacy for honorable men to leave their children and grandchildren......those that survive...... So you'd sooner see the dead shoveled into mass graves and forgotten, no memorials, no markers? What's important is what they SHOULD have done. What they should have done.......and didn't.......was smoke the butchers Which country, which war, which invasion, which genocide, which century, which religious oppression? And, pray, how does one "smoke the butchers" without using force, becoming the butcher, being consumed by the revolution? It is well and good to spout pacifism or your brand of non-militarism from a point and time in history that allows such. Take it back only a generation and cross the Atlantic. While you might still have rejected the propaganda and the martial music, would you have stood alone and been marched to the camps or the execution pits? You and I both did not choose jail over service. You chose a normally non-combatant branch and I chose to carry an aidbag into combat. What we both "should have done" according to you, we did not. If that guilt still eats at you, too bad. Don't think this response means that I care about your opinion, I'm merely pointing out the central flaw in your "should have." While we agree on more than you will ever recognize, your view of matters militaire and mine will never coincide. I see history and culture from a vastly different vantage than you. So save your energy and your spleen for someone who cares about your opinions. -- Stev Lenon 91B20 '68-'69 When the dawn came up like thunder http://web.tampabay.rr.com/stevglo/i...age92kword.htm |

"slenon" wrote in message ... Wolfgang helluva legacy for honorable men to leave their children and grandchildren......those that survive...... So you'd sooner see the dead shoveled into mass graves and forgotten, no memorials, no markers? Huh? What the HELL are you prating about now? What's important is what they SHOULD have done. What they should have done.......and didn't.......was smoke the butchers Which country, which war, which invasion, which genocide, which century, which religious oppression? Which country, which war, which invasion, which genocide, which century, which religious oppression, what? And, pray, how does one "smoke the butchers" without using force, becoming the butcher, being consumed by the revolution? Keeping them in the public eye and being sure that they are properly identified is a good start, I think. What do you think? It is well and good to spout pacifism Pacifism? Who said anything about pacifism? You think I'M a pacifist?! Good God, where DO you people get these amazingly stupid ideas from? or your brand of non-militarism from a point and time in history that allows such. Well, I'll agree with you this far, Ste. I mean, the very notion of spouting anything from a point and time in history that DOESN'T allow it is kind of silly, wouldn't you say? And yes, it is indeed well and good. Take it back only a generation and cross the Atlantic. That depends on just how you compute generations. As a matter of fact, roughly fifty years ago I was across the Atlantic from where I am now. So, crossing it then would have meant coming here......which is exactly what I did. While you might still have rejected the propaganda and the martial music, would you have stood alone and been marched to the camps or the execution pits? Um.......you mean Guantanamo.....a jail in New Jersey.....or what? You and I both did not choose jail over service. Jail never entered into the equation in my case. What was it you got busted for? Did it have anything to do with small animals? You chose a normally non-combatant branch The United States Coast Guard has been active in every war the United States has engaged in since 1790 (if memory serves, and albeit under a different name in the early years).......at least up until the current ones......I haven't kept track of their present engagement status. The Coast Guard has typically sustained high casualties as a result of it's particularly dangerous assigned duties in times of war. Moreover, even in times of peace the Coast Guard has always carried out a number of extremely hazardous jobs, including some that periodically put individuals in various units under hostile fire. Or, to put it in the vernacular, you don't know ****. and I chose to carry an aidbag into combat. Well, aren't you the little hero. What we both "should have done" according to you, we did not. You were a hippie too?! Well, I be go ta hell. If that guilt still eats at you, too bad. Guilt? What guilt? Have I done something I should feel guilty about and nobody told me? Don't think this response means that I care about your opinion, No, of course not. As often as I've been told, even I have eventually come to the realization that the ONLY people who respond to me are those who don't care about my opinions. I'm merely pointing out the central flaw in your "should have." I don't suppose it's occurred to you that reading what I said first would lend some weight to your argument, huh? While we agree on more than you will ever recognize, You haven't got much of a clue about what we might agree on. As for recognition, I most certainly do recognize you and your ilk. You may rest assured that I will occassionally point you out to others. your view of matters militaire and mine will never coincide. "Militaire"? Ooh! Sacre bleu, mi hermano! Why didn't you TELL me you speak Dutch? Well, that makes all the difference in the world! I see history and culture from a vastly different vantage than you. No ****. Things ALWAYS look different from the abbatoir. So save your energy and your spleen for someone who cares about your opinions. Got anybody in mind? I mean it looks pretty much like nobody here does. Wolfgang who is just about THIS close to not caring about anybody else's opinions! :( |
