One of my favorite newspaper tar heels is Josephus Daniels (sp?). He
was ambassador to Mexico and Sec of the Navy. But his most brilliant
work was his open-eyed description of exactly how Blacks were
disenfranchised and power was reclaimed from the carpetbaggers during
Reconstruction. I recall the book was entitled "Tar heel Editor," and
IMHO it was a landmark of objective historical analysis, far ahead of
its time. I had the privilege of being first to explore an archive of
Mexican political street literature collected by Daniels' clerk during
the Mexican Revolution 1910-17.

christensen has some interesting stuff about him in his series -
Josephus Daniels (1894-1948)is among the tar heel "royalty". he was the
editor and publisher of the "news and observer" newspaper - my favorite
and most comfortable newspaper - once owned by the Daniels family, but
acquired some years ago by the mcclatchy corp. ... published some
interesting stuff about henry wallace's campaign in the state after fdr
dumped him and he ran for prez.

Daniels' was born in 1862.

you're correct...he was the editor and publisher of the news and
observer from 1894 until 1948... should have put the parenthetical in
the next sentence. got the dates off the editorial page of the n&o which
has a quote from his will...erred in assuming those were birth/death dates.
