if said hook is attached to suitable stonefly nymph(possibly darker
variations), you can probably do as you do in the East. This from the

limited
experiences I have stumbled through out West.
Tom

Kinda figured the stoneflies would be a good place to start, ya coming out
Tom??....Ahh come on...

I'm giving it a good thought....put me on the list as tentative.

Will do Mike.

Cool!! It's getting even better of a possibility, wife didn't throw me out
when I mentioned it.

I did sort of offer to send her down to Florida on her own for our neice's
graduation, before I dared to ask.

That may have backfired a bit, her graduation is May 14th, which was my
planned arrival date for Penn's Clave. Oh well, those NC boys will have all
of the fish scar..I mean.. trained, well enough to make it a challenge again
this year in Mike's Run..

Looking into airfare and it may not be as easy as first thought, but I'll
make it work. I have a freebie flight on American Airlines to use, but the
closest they may come is Jackson Hole (via Dallas none the less). Checked
out Denver and Salt Lake but they look a bit far unless I can hitch a ride
with a fellow Claver back and forth (the flight choices were better).
Billings/Bozeman was my preference but couldn't find anything that was
affordable that would work. Looks like most everything goes through Dallas
too, guess they had to do something with that wasteland besides siphoning
all of the oil out of the ground and barbequing some crimnals.

How much travel time from Jackson Hole to Clave Central should I expect
(without all of the sightseeing I'm sure to do)?? Would I be cutting
through Yellewstone to get there or going over through Idaho to avoid the
summer crowd in Yellowstone (the Idaho route looks much longer, but I have
no idea if Yellowstone roads get pounded in summer or not)??

Anyone else going to be going that way on Saturday? or maybe Thursday? For
some reason I can't get the freebie flight on Friday.

If you want to camp, I can have gear waiting for you out here. Tent,
sleeping bag, can chare my cooking gear, etc.

Book me a tent, sound's perfect. One less set of hassles...

The fish can be very selective at times and definitely aren't easy
enough to take a shiny hook. We very well could be fishing anything
from huge salmonfly dries (Sofa Pillows, Stimulators, etc) to SJ size
midge patterns depending on what is going on and where we will be
fishing.

Ohh Jeez, I'll load up the fly suitcase after checking out the suggested
sites.

Thanks for the information, and the roof. I'll supply the brew, and if
memory serves, it won't be Yeungling (what is the preferred??).

Lots more Q&A to come.....

Mike

Just get your ass out here and we'll come up with some flies for you.

I'm planning...

Most of our rivers are freestone and GENERALLY, our hatches aren't as
heavy and the fish aren't as selective to pattern as what you and Tom
have described on Penns. However, their character is very different from
Penns and presentation is usually very important.

Ahh the challenge..a more delicate presentation. I'll have to try to work
out some of the 15+years of bad habits.

Do they prefer a touch of movement on the surface (invoked.. not drag) or a
dead drift? or just depends fish to fish?

Ya coming to Penns? I know you seemed to be on the fence about it..

Mike

I'll have lots of Stimulators in various sizes, and lots of Stonefly

nymphs
also. A 6 weight might be handy also.

Bruce!!

Haven't fished with ya yet, but hoping to get the chance to in July.

A six weight for nymphing, surface, or ?? I've got an old early graphite
(early 80s) TnT 6 weight, but it's a bit heavy by today's standards. Could
I get by with a 590 SP? What type of depths and waterflow are we talking?

um.......don't the bush tribe own some land up in maine, too? :(

In Kennebunkport, which is to Maine what Eitzen is to Minnesota. As far as
most Real Mainers are concerned, the Bush clan have never even been to
Maine.

That's a good question.

I'm going to tie up some of the foam hoppers (BLT and club sandwich
type) that I had good luck with on Rock Creek. If they don't work on
the Madison we can use them to make rafts. g

When I lived in Austin a few years ago and knew a guy that traveled a good bit
and Charlie always said that if you were in Austin and had to go straight to
hell, you had to change planes at D/FW.

As I remember the drive from Jackson to Clave Central area thru Idaho was
further in miles but shorter time than going thru the park when you consider
all the stops for buffalo. That drive takes longer in August, or at least it
did a couple of years ago. That also might depend on which roads in the park
have the most construction this summer. I suspect Warren will have better
information on that in a few months.

I wouldn't say more delicate, just different for the different types of
water. Many of the Rockie's rivers are more burly than Penns. Heavier
current, more boulders, etc. Lots of different types of water to fish.

Still on the fence. The weather worries me. And there's Belize.
