Yeah sure, you can specifiy who gets your money and who doesn't; but
i figger if I'm going to do that, I may as well just send it directly.

Even when you do that, a certain overhead goes back to UW; thus, you're
overheads might just be helping to raise money for some right to life
groups fundraising through UW

I contribute sporadically to the United Way

Oddly enough, I won't do the United Way thing.

In some of their locales, some of the leadership has run into trouble, but
more importantly, I can't stand to think of ANY of my overhead being used
to raise funds for organizations I can't support on ethical grounds (even
though the overhead is quite low and reasonable). I also really object to
employers putting the squeeze on employees.

I don't consider it odd. I thought UW was a wonderful idea at first.
I happily contributed at my work place. Then their major promise was
broken. The one that said it would be the only organization to
solicit funds from me. I'd answer all calls with, "I give to United
Way at work." and toss all unsolicited pleas.

By then it was so popular with bosses that it became mandatory,
especially at hospitals, to have that good old 100% participation.
Bah. Since they'd have found a way to lose me to unemployment (and we
all know it can be done) if I'd made them only have 99.99%
participation, I'd give. A $1.00 one time donation. As the years
have passed and hordes of charities are still begging and UW has had
upper management abuses of funds, I don't do anything any more, now
that I've not worked in hospitals for a long time.

It's not the multitude of charities that I may not find to my liking
that I object to as much as the pressure and the broken promise. I
have a few charities I very minorly support on occasion. Ones that
don't seem to be too top heavy with management.

Only a fool would refuse to believe in luck. Only a damn fool would rely on it.
