several usages were used simultaneously. There's also the theories that
it comes from the earlier English term for braggart, and that it
actually comes from, well, crackers (the eating kind, like what Linda
uses for his hors d'oeuvres). But given what APPEARED Deepstick was
pecking out about "salves," he was relying on the "whip-cracker" theory
of origin.

what the hell, i will add my own understanding of the origin of both
appellations:

cracker: originally "soda cracker", from the skin coloring of the
caucasian population, a term used between blacks to deride their oppressors.

Hence, my reference above to "...crackers (the eating kind...)" Heck,
the word has quite a few (alleged) origins and even usages, not all
necessarily derogatory: Florida, amongst other places, actually has an
architectural style, the "cracker house" that has become of somewhat
common (and of neutral implication) usage.

red neck: also related to skin color, specifically that of the back of
white farmers' necks, which was burnt by the sun as they plowed. the rest
of their torso was covered by a sweat soaked shirt, and their faces shaded
by caps or hats.

And that is my understanding of the origin of "redneck," too.

not that i would know what i am talking about, being from the old north
state, and all, as opposed to louisiana or texas. :)

Oh, OK, I thought it was not because of location, but rather, vocat...

No, but maybe I was unclear in the meaning: "Google is a wonderful thing - you
can not only [accurately] get inaccurate information, but LOTS of it!" ;-)

All I'm saying, Bill, is that not everything a person reads on the Internet is
accurate.

TL,

.. . . and, yes, dammit - that includes roff. :)
(was smiley placement better that time?)

My bad. I misread. Didn't see the "in" before accurate. I've just got my
information radar cranked up a bit too high. Got squelch?

From the library,

Didn't I just answer that one ? What's the matter, Chester,
didn't like that answer ?

OK, here's another.

Instead of embarrassing and amusing yourself by pretending
to be roff's own badass, cracker buffoon, it's time for you
to rummage through Miss Daisy Mae Dildo's sock drawer and
find something with which to pleasure yourself in private.

Well, I could tell you, but by the time you read this post it
would already be inaccurate.

If you really want to know what time it is I suggest you get
Miss Daisy Mae Dildo to explain to you about the big hands
and the little hands.
