Does anyone build their own leaders?
I use the same leader butt forever and build it from there, because I'm
cheap. Many of us here use Tectan monofilament spooled onto Rio spools ; -). Tectan, from Cabelas, isn't all that abrasion resistant but it's cheap. As much as I like saving money, the part I really like is winding about 150 yards of tippet onto one spool and rarely running out when I'm fishing. My friend just gave me about 150 yards of P Line flourocarbon, apprx. 5x, and it's pretty good stuff too. bruce h "Guy Thornberg" wrote in message ... Randy, I tied a bunch of leaders accoring to the recipes around the web and they worked fine. Now I just tie some of this and that from heavy to light in about the lengths I think are appropriate for the water and they work fine too. for the tippet, I tie on the lightest line that will not break on the rise (I hope). Also, if in a rush, tie on a 8' or 9' tapered leader and ad the tippet material on to the end for the length desired. I know. Not scientific but it works fine for me. (be sure the fly is tied to the tippet with a clean knot without any kinky tippet material in front of the fly). Guy |

One nice thing about Tectan is that it is thinner than any other mono for a given lb test. But I don't know that I would call it cheap: it's more expensive than almost all other monos, no ? |

Randy I usually just buy the prepackaged leaders but was wondering Randy what if any, are the advantages / disadvantages of "rolling Randy your own" leaders? Initially I used leaders made of two sections of mono, connected to each other with loop-to-loop connections. When I started using "gracefully thinning" leaders, I tied them myself from the very beginning. I've never bought a ready-made tapered leader. The original reason was the idea of using different formulas for different tasks. I guess it's still true to some degree, but the number of different formulas that I use has decreased somewhat since the beginning. One of the main reasons for tying the leaders myself now is the ability to use different diameters in the butt section of the leader for 2wt-6wt lines. I now tie - basic 9' leaders with .21 butt section for my 6wt - basic 9' leaders with .19 butt section for my 4wt - delicate 12' dry fly leaders with .19 butt section for the 4wt - 5'-7.5' small-stream leaders with .19 butt section for my 3wt (with which I use a 4wt line for close-up fishing) - 8' basic leaders with .17 butt section for my 2wt - 12' delicate dry fly leaders with .17 butt section for the 2wt -- Jarmo Hurri Commercial email countermeasures included in header email address. Cheap compared to 30m tippett spools. It is pretty expensive for mono. bruce h |
