Mark i do recall...but you also carried enough weight in your backpack to cause those boots to sink into the rockface. i noted your skidding on the rock a couple of times too. the worst fall i've ever had, one which broke a bone in my elbow, was on our trip on upper that day we tried to reach the falls...i was on a relatively dry, sloping rockface and i was wearing my studded chotas. i suspect i'm as agile as chuck, but not as nimble or strong as you, hence my recommendation. jeff |
"Jeff Miller" wrote So I'd probably be OK with a handful of para Adams and Royal Wulffs? In my short time ff'ing for trout, those have been my most productive flies. for the most part, and for the best fishing, the hiking will be in and along the stream...not on a trail beside the stream... those flies will work well, but take some ehc also. by early june, a nymph pattern that imitates stoneflies, and big ones at that, is much more productive than anything on top, imho. best i have ever done on hazel after mid may was by fishing a #12 prince with one split shot. in terms of dries, big yellow humpies. wet wade...but, it's always nice to have waders along when you want to stay dry or bumpass down a ridge bank. So it would be worth my while to make room for them in my luggage? i'd take them along just in case. i prefer wet wading. feels freer, cleaner, simpler. but, when you want to be dry, well, the waders are nice to have. perfect time for waist high breathables. where is the place located? snowbird and buffalo are on the south side of lake santeetlah and robbinsville...about a 15-20 minute drive to robbinsville, 40-45 minutes to bryson city, which is northwest of robbinsville and on the east edge of fontana lake. depending on the streams you intend to focus on, your location will have some importance as far as convenience and travel time. stecoah is midway between robbinsville and bryson city, and the home of tootie's. i'll let wayno introduce the program on tootie's, though it's a bit more cosmopolitan nowadays than his stories will represent. you'll have to drive 30 minutes for most streams if you stay in stecoah. stecoah is the most centrally located site, and if you are going to spend most of the time on the fontana drainage, the best idea. close to tooties for breakfast and bryson city for dinner. otoh, if you choose to favor the snowbird/west buffalo waters, robbinsville is to be preferred. it's probably more like 45-50 mins from stecoah to streamside at the "junction" on big snowbird. yfitons wayno |

Bring your rock huggers, as we may be slip slidin' away! I look forward to the experience again. Please don't back out, as I can't get anyone else to fish with me. Wally, said something about fishin' in the morn, but I forgot that there is a football game tomorrow. Mark |

They do make a good breakfast, but their wine list is equestrian at best. Best breakfast I ever ate in Graham County, I ate at Tootie's. Of course, if I had been served the same breakfast in Urbana I'd have called the Health Department and a trial lawyer, in that order. ;-) First breakfast I had there the waitress put the check on the table and PJ picked it up, so I threw down a tip. Apparently picking up the check has a different meaning in North Cackalacky than it does in the civilized world because when I got outside and thanked him for breakfast PJ looked at me funny and said I didn't buy *your* breakfast. Oops. Went back inside did the math and paid while Wayno snatched the tip off the table, explaining that the waitress would most surely misinterpret such a large tip as something untoward. Any more I spend my meal money in Swain County. -- Ken Fortenberry |

Sadly, that is true. We have a couple of places that will do in a pinch, but for a town of 100,000 Champaign-Urbana really sucks for good restaurants. Thank god Chicago is just up the road. -- Ken Fortenberry |
