Following the origins, myths &

one of the most delightful journeys into the settlement of America one
could have.

And don't forget the Carter Family.....

Or Gid Tanner and the Skillet Lickers.

I can't remember the name of the guy that recorded "The Prisoner's Song",

("If
I had the wings of an angel"), but I understand that was the first

"crossover"
country/pop hit.

George Adams

"All good fishermen stay young until they die, for fishing is the only

dream of
youth that doth not grow stale with age."
---- J.W Muller

ah, yes, nearly iconic in my opinion, however, the distinction should be
made that gid and his boys are (most excellently) old time music
musicians....

All good stuff- and a good start as well, but let me edeecate ya'll on

the
folks that really defined country music. It all started back in the

1920s
with the minstrel shows, which led to the popularity of the hillbilly

string
bands.
Probably ya'll have all heard Jimmie Rodgers, Roy Acuff, Tom Ashley, and
Uncle Dave Macon- all very important in the history of early country

music.
However, the first folks to actually record and popularize country music
were "Fiddlin" John Carson, with his recording of Cluck Old Hen, in

1923,
and Eck Robertson with his recording of Sallie Gooden, in 1922. These

were
the first country music recordings, and Fiddlin John Carson has been
attributed with revolutionizing the role of Old Time fiddling.
We can thank Ralph Peer and Tennessee for givin us these folks

recordings.

And don't forget the Carter Family.....

Also, I agree that today's "country" SUCKS

Snakefiddler- to steal a line from Wolfgang-
class dismissed ;-)

"I'm goin' to th' wagon, Ma, these shoes are KILLIN' ME"
"Doctor" Lew Childre

WUNC-TV (Chapel Hill, NC) produced a show in the 1980's "Free Show

Tonight",
wherein they sought and were surprisingly successful in locating some of

the
surviving performers from the "Medicine Show" era. I think it's still

available
on VHS tape.

The show was a bit of an attempt to record a vanishing part of the history

of
that time. I think that they succeded.

BTW, why is it that nobody mentions Riley Puckett when recalling old

timers?
Nobody recalls him, I suppose.

Tom

Well, you could say we sort of mentioned ol riley in a round about sort of
way, as he was once the guitarist for the skillet lickers- also did some
duets with hugh ballard cross

Heard a radio interview with Haggard once and he said he & his co
writer didn't know squat about Muscogee when they they wrote the song
and had never been there. They saw the name & the sound of it just fit
in with the song so they used it.

Perhaps my favorite song of all time. It has always struck me as
heartwarming that as late as 1969 a couple'a millionaire populist good ole
boys could still wave old glory down at the courthouse and have a smash hit
across the American heartland with a song extolling the virtues of one
illegal drug as compared to another. :)

Now there's a "football major" for ya. Ranks right up there with basket
weaving and finger painting.

You go, girl, but be advised, you're pursuing a degree, not an education.
