Much as in GC's fine report, I was in need of some refreshening. Stan
came by my office on Tuesday and said he was also ready for a day off
for some fishing, so we made plans to head off to Pottapaug Pond on
Thursday.

We couldn't have picked a better day. Thursday brought with it bright
sunny skies with a few puffs of clouds as accents. Stan and I met as he
pulled his van into the new secret spot in Belchertown (
http://css.sbcma.com/timj/pics/fishvan.jpg ). We then caravanned to the
pond: http://css.sbcma.com/timj/pics/pottapaug.jpg , which is part of
The Quabbin reservoir system. After we motored out for a while, we
started fishing in earnest and, after a few relocations, found some
great spots to fish. We picked up a lot of nice chunky bluegill in a few
coves like this one: http://css.sbcma.com/timj/pics/bluegill_cove.jpg
and even caught a big crappie and a fair sized LM bass. Most of the fish
caught yesterday were hooked on various gurgler patterns, although I did
cheat and use a soft plastic grub for a few fish.

The best part of the day was just being outside. The temperature was in
the high 70's, low humidity, and, as you can see from the photos, clear
as a bell. We saw several beaver, great blue heron, and egret. It was
the type of day where it was difficult to think of anything other than
fun on the water. We'll be going out there again at least once or twice
more this season, one of the times (I hope) during fall foliage peak
colors.

If you're gonna keep this spot secret, pak inside the lines....way too obvious,
and spies are everywhere. G

Nice report, very nice pictures. It is amazing how many really nice spots there
are right here in the center of the People's Republic.

Fished a bit myself yesterday, (not in the secret spot), catching was good,
fishing was better, and, as you said, weather was perfect. Life is good.

Well, it USED to be a pond before the Quabbin Reservoir was filled. Now
it's part of the Quabbin, though slightly separated. Here's a map that
puts things into perspective, if you consider the Quabbin itself is 20+
miles long: http://css.sbcma.com/timj/pics/pottapaug.gif I've circled
the Pottapaug area. As you can see, it's bigger than most lakes.

Another thing I forgot to mention in my mini-TR: Because of the mild
summer, the plants in the water were very sparse this year, making for
much better fishing conditions. Typically, areas like the photo of the
bluegill cove are completely thick with water plants.

Oh, it is. Also a good place for bass (large and smallmouth), white and
yellow perch, and chain pickerel. Maybe the best bluegill fishing in the
State. It's like 8 bluegill ponds rolled into one. Tim and I had the whole
place to ourselves. No sound at all aside from the birds and bugs and
occasional noises from us.

The bad news is I blew up my 4 wt. rod - male part of a spigot ferrule
shatterred during a cast. Good news is it's guaranteed, and as good news,
my 3 weight KPOS casts a 4 wt. line beautifully so I was able to keep on
fishing.

We'll be going out there again at least once or twice
more this season, one of the times (I hope) during fall foliage peak
colors.

Excellent TR. It looks as though the Massachussians were trying to
bring a bit of Maine closer to home when they flooded those valleys.
It must have been quite traumatic for the residents of those old New
England settlements. We even have a couple of picture books that deal
with the subject in the kid's department at the local library.

The picture of the van is cool. Lots of people don't realise that
Villagers and Nissan Quests were built in the same factory with
basically the same bodies as each other. The Quests have 6 cyl.
Maxima engines though, I don't know what the Villagers have under the
hood. Here's a pic of our Quest.

http://www.myfishingpictures.com/img/032416.JPG

Thanks again for the TR.

We'll be going out there again at least once or twice
more this season, one of the times (I hope) during fall foliage peak

Thanks again for the TR.

And some of us do. The cars were identical except for trim details, option
packages, and the sticker price. The Villager won me over because anti-lock
brakes were standard and to get them on the Quest meant buying a $1,000
package I didn't want. I've been driving Nissans since they were Datsuns
(even though one had a Mercury label). I think the Villager/Quest is an
ideal fishing car.

The tires are low on one side - it's leaning toward the left.

Thanks again for the TR.

You're welcome - it was a lot of fun.
