o.k., folks-
please tell me everything i need to know about this anti-clave. exactly
where is it? i'd like to look into a little bit of the local history- know
something about the area. never having attended one of these things, i am
pretty clueless as to the trappings.
where will we be fishing? how do folks find one another since people will
be arriving on different days? is there anything besides the obvious
(fishing gear, fishing attire, non-fishing clothes, etc) that i need to
bring?

all help will be appreciated-

The Anti-Clave is in Graham County, southwest of Robbinsville.
http://www.grahamcountytravel.com/maps/GC_MAP.jpg

This site should give ya a little info about the area, and you can google of course.
http://www.grahamcountytravel.com/about.html

The fishin' will be all over the area, streams rivers and lakes, depending upon the
participants adventurous nature.

Jeff will likely post directions to his place, but it was my experience that folks
just kinda found one another once they began showing up. Stop in at this rangers
station and they will have maps and info about campin' areas.
http://www.main.nc.us/graham/hiking/rangerhq.html

Bring warm clothes for the evenings and rain gear!

You have two choices for lodgings, basically: rent or camp out. I have some info
here at the house, somewhere, from my one time Anti-Clave. I'll try to find it for
ya, as I won't know if I am gonna make it 'til the last minute.

Don't fall for that, snake. Demand to know which brand of beer and if
it's to be lager or ale. They're tricky about that stuff.

october 9 - 16, graham county & swain county. rachel and i are staying
through the 23rd, so we'll be around if you need to plan a later date or
visit. our rental is in the snowbird area, south of robbinsville, on
snowbird creek. some folks are looking at the rentals over at almond
boat docks on fontana lake...about 30 minutes from snowbird...and some
are staying in robbinsville at motels (usually $40-90 per night).

great smoky mountain national park. fontana lake. santeetlah lake.
nantahala lake. lots of trout streams to fish. if you want to save
bucks and camp, there are plenty of free streamside campgrounds... as i
recall, mark has the hilton camping suite package. he could probably
loan it to you.... a shower will be available to campers in need. folks
seem to work out fishing and gathering details on a last minute basis.
we'll be visiting hazel creek ...something you should do at least once
during your trout fishing sojourn in nc. wayno knows the area well.
mark visited one year... i like it better than the blue ridge range
around boone. less populated, different "feel". here's a link to get
you started...

http://www.grahamchamber.com/

tooties in stecoah used to have a bluegrass night...i think it's similar
to the place you visit in blowing rock.

anyway, if you like the mountains of nc, you should visit the smoky
mountain area (western section...avoid cherokee area). ...and, bring
beer, vodka, gin, whisky, whiskey. almost any beer from the rogue
brewery will do... becks are ok as well. i have a useful cooler. there
is a nice spirit store in boone near app state on 105...excellent
selection for you to consider. but, don't go near wally with any of the
brews though, as cases magically turn to a six-pack in his presence.
look forward to meeting and fishing with you.

october 9 - 16, graham county & swain county. rachel and i are staying
through the 23rd, so we'll be around if you need to plan a later date or
visit. our rental is in the snowbird area, south of robbinsville, on
snowbird creek. some folks are looking at the rentals over at almond boat
docks on fontana lake...about 30 minutes from snowbird...and some are
staying in robbinsville at motels (usually $40-90 per night).

//snip//

Anybody interested in a walk up Hazel Creek - mebbe spend a couple of nights
there? (reprise of the death march?) Also, what do you'uns think about
Forney and Noland and other creeks near the road to nowhere? I've never been
on those creeks and thought it might be fun to give it a try.

Noland is worth fishing if you don't mind smallish fish and a
very nice but somewhat long day hike. Forney is pretty much a
wash for fishing. For some reason that creek has never really
recovered from the deforestation and the sections you can reach
on a reasonable round-trip day hike from the Road to Nowhere are
pretty much a perennial ugly, muddy mess.

not a good idea. heavily fished, and not that good water in the first
place.

better that you go up ...... creek, or hike a little ways up eagle to
eeklaneetee.

bob - i'm bringing my bay boat as an experiment. if the lake is high
enough, i'm hoping to check out chambers and forney where they enter the
lake - i've never been there. a hike up hazel is a definite plan... we
also need to do that snowbird thing. but, as rachel will be along, i
won't be overnighting.

noland is easy access and has a good trail - similar to the one along
hazel. i've been about 3 miles up it. i caught small rainbows when i
fished it. i also caught a hornets' nest... g i liked the hike.
though easy to access because of the paved road and parking lot, i only
saw one other person fishing in the lower stretch. i've heard some of
the big fish move up from the lake and ramble about in the lower
stretches in the fall...

i'd like to make that ride to chambers, jeffie. it is the most remote
and least fished water on the north shore. could be pretty sweet in what i
would expect to be high water. snakiest lookin' place i've ever seen. but
i haven't actually seen a snake in three trips. :)

my hope is that the snakes will be moving elsewhere in october. hazel
was one of the snakiest spots i've ever been to. i went over one summer
in the 80s with jim, roy bailey, and howard cummings... damn things were
sunning in the trees and on the rocks everywhere.

anyway...consider chambers a plan.

at some point, as we near oct 9, i reckon i need to know who'll be
around and when. have you talked to jim?
