I have several different types of maps that have no home
what is the best way to keep them organized
the maps I need to organize are lake and forestry maps as well as road maps.
does anyone have a system that they wanna share?

Depending on how they are folded and how many you have you could try using
large three ring binders with plastic pocket pages.

We kept all the documentation for computer games organized that way for
years.

Just like Bob said the 3 ring binder has always worked for me. Plus tabs to
alphabetize them always helps.

Or in the glovebox, over the visor, on the dash, or in the side pocket
of the door :)

Depends on the size. I have a few of those stand alone plastic file folders
filled with smaller maps using hanging files inside the plastic cases.

For larger maps, 4 inch Schedule-25 PVC piping is pretty lightweight. I cut
them to 3 or 4 foot lengths depending on the maps and glue one end cap on,
and just hand tighten the other side. Schedule 25 PVC is much lighter than
the schedule 40 but you might have to dig for it at places like Home Depot.

The side pocket of the truck door does very well. Then when you get to the lake, the map gets
transferred from the truck door to the console, wedged between the windshield and the locator. They
stay there at speeds up to 75 mph, faster than that and they blow out! :-(

Put it in a zip lock freezer bag and keep it out of the
sun. It will even float if your boat sinks.

Yep, the last time my boat sank, my first thought was "Damn! The maps!"

Seriously though, not a half-bad idea

I actually have two storage areas, besides the boat glovebox. West Marine
sells a Chart Book and a case for it. The case is a giant, heavy plastic
ziplock with a zipper arrangement. I also use a clear ~4" tube they sell
for a lot of the other charts and paperwork and clothespins to hold stuff
from flying about.

All maps are carefully stacked and stored in a pile. Until it falls over.
Which then leads to 2 smaller piles.
Which then continue to grow and fall over thereby creating a single pile
again. Repeat as needed.
I use the same system for tax records, monthly bills, and hate mail to the
ex.

climb the pile and really do something about it
I think I am at 12 piles now.

That's what got me started scanning them in the first place. Took the kids
out fishing and they ruined the map book I had gotten from the county. After
scanning them, we only took a printed verison with, so we could always
reprint if needed.

From there, we have about 200 maps online for the area now... All with
permission from originating agencies (and we even got DuPage County to
drop the fee for their booklet so they were free online or in person...
course, the fewer booklets they have to print, the more $'s they might
have left over for spring stocking). Kind of a odd thing, but has been
a great excuse for buying hardware (but, I need the new scanner/camera...) ;-)

P.S. Trying to convince your wife you need better powertools... be a volunteer
scout leader "I needed the new router table to cut the birdhouses faster".
Worked for me....

I recalled that the Army map cases in Vietnam were

very similar to the zip locks of today. Discarded ones
and the ones we could barter from the supply sgt.
were used to store cigarettes, matches and toilet paper.
It would keep them dry in the humid weather and even more so inside a
rucksack. It was from that remembrance
that I got the idea from. Glad you all find it favorable :-)
