t.r. - the snake got the fsih :-(
after writing a short paper this morning, and doing some reading for a
class, i decided to pack up the rest of my school-work, and take it to the park up on the parkway. it was just too beautiful a day up here on the mountain to spend it inside. i figured that since i was going to a park with a stream, i might just as well take my fly rod, you know, in case i needed a break from all that homework ;-). i got myself up there, and did a little reading like the diligent student that i am g, and then decided it was time to get into the water. i put my boots and vest on, and commenced to assembling my rod, tied on some new tippet, and a green worm. ready for action, i headed across the little bridge to the spot i best like to fish in that park. i was greeted by a man and his son, who decided to take up seats on the ground and watch the action (folks seem to be very interested in watching people fly fish. every time i go there, i always have several on-lookers). as i stepped to the edge of the water, i saw my fish! he was fairly long, and dark, swimming just under the surface- couldn't make out what he was, although i do think i saw some whiskers. i unhooked my fly from the guide, and prepared for my first cast, calculating where i should cast it to get the best results. then, just as i raised my arm, a quite long, brown, banded snake swam up and snatched him! well, i was quite put out, but there is no question that the better fisherman won, and it was nothing less than fascinating to watch the snake take that fish up onto the sloping bank, and work it. i was glad that the man with the little boy did not have his son avert his eyes, rather they watched the action together. great stuff for a kid, i think. it wasn't too long though, before i wished the man had left cause i swear to god he was the freakin howard cosell of fishing! he was all full of , "ooh, you had a strike", "oh, looks like ya caught a leaf", etc. it got a little annoying. anyway, the star of the day was that awesome fish stealing snake. snake- (who has to occasionally defer to the real thing) |

What's really interesting is having a snake take a fish that is on the end of your line. That happened to me years ago on my favorite local river. I hooked a small bass and a cottonmouth decided he wanted it. I wasn't about to disagree with him. Chuck Vance (who executed a different sort of LDR by cutting the line) |

A weird thing I saw one time on Fountain Creek was a live bluegill with a dead snake stuck to its head. The little snake literally took on more than he could chew and died with a fish stuck in his mouth. Today I saw something that might be related to that. A water snake was cruising in the shallows and he was being followed closely by a couple of decent-sized bass. Neither the bass nor the snake looked like they were concerned at all by the presence of the others. Maybe the bass were keeping an eye on the snake just in case he got a bluegill he couldn't handle. :-) Chuck Vance |

So far, that's you and Frank. Anyone else? ;-) Heh . . . heh . . .went out for my first time in a while yesterday. Stupid health things and timing and such. Caught NO fish yesterday . . .can't remember when that last occurred. The weather was dismal. Rain here and snow above 9000 feet. (proved to be true) But left West Denver about 7:30 AM and returned about 6:15 PM. with my fishing partner, Don. Slightly raining when we left, turned to sleet and snow at 9000 feet and above and rained throughout the day when we dropped to lower elevations. Looked at 4 rivers/streams. Found a great area to explore at a time later. (he has lived here all his life and I only have lived here 15-16 years or so .. . .in two separate time frames) Neither of us had explored the place. For any curious it is in the . . ..mumble . . .mumble . . .area. Anyhow, we traveled several hundred miles, mostly just looking around. Saw my first moose in Colorado (got one not so good pic . . .I'll post to ABPF if anybody cares), a mom deer with a couple youngsters, several species of hawks (one just catching and eating lunch) , several more deer, the standard squirrel varieties we have out here, chipmunks of course for here, ravens, crows, only one bunny, a muskrat and the standard variety of little birds. ( plus numerous active beaver lodges in one area) Also saw fresh elk tracks from the morning in one area. This all in the rain. Stopped for lunch at a river. I walked down to it and saw the first rises of the day. My partner waited at the truck. I went back to tell him and rain picked up. We waited a bit for this heavier shower to pass, and I went back to the river to see if the fish were still rising . . .very sporadic. So, we moved on. Went to another place on the river. Met some folks leaving who had no luck, but said there were fish rising. We took a look. Sure 'nuff. My partner was having back problems all day and said he couldn't fish. We were in an area where it was "possible" to cast from shore. I got lazy, and decided to try it without waders from shore. (dumb idea) The fish were rising, but there was no real hatch happening. Saw an occasional size 26 or so something that looked like a baetis. I tied on a size 24 thingee, with a size 24 emerger dropper. I could make the cast to the fish, but I couldn't do the drift, with the current. Decided to wet wade (dumb idea 2). Missed 2 fish, one on my original rig, and another changing flies and using no dropper. My partner, of course, was "helping" me . . . letting me know where all the fish were rising upstream or downstream of me . . .grinning because his back was too sore for him to try it. So . . . after about 15 minutes or so . . .and 2 missed fish . . .and me trying to try another combination, I noticed my hands starting to shake. (tying on 6x-7x and size 24, and now 26 size stuff) Tuff to wet wade when it gets chilly. I just laughed and grumbled about fish trying to eat with their mouths closed, and my stupidity about wet wading. We moved on. Babbling ended. I caught NO fish. It rained or snowed on us all day. One of the best memorable days I've had for quite awhile. BestWishes, Dave Mohnsen Denver (and NO fish . . .sort of a relief actually . . .didn't have to put any wear and tear on my reel playing those pesky fish) |
