I know a guy in Rhode Island who is the most anal of any fly fisherman
I know when it comes to the care of fly lines. He's in his late 80's
and claims to have not replaced a fly line in 9-10 years. He's a big
believer in applying amor-all but he also cleans his lines with soap
and water at least once a month and takes them off the reels in winter.
I've not done it myself.

I've used 303 Protectant, but not Armorall. 303 is, I think, similar to the
original Armorall formula. I use it on my plastic kayaks. FWIW

hell, knight, no surprise there. my bet is you *never* touch your
current fly line, hoping desperately that the damn thing will self-destruct,
at which time you can go buy a new one...
not that there's anything wrong with that!

Harrison, you're the last person I would expect to comment on what I
touch counselor.

All of my fly lines get somewhat cleaned at least once a year, I don't
usually soak them but I take them off the reel and run them through a
damp washcloth, dry them, and then reel them back on with one of the
cortland cleaning patches they used to give you with the line (do they
still do that?) or the SA( or is Umqua?) line dressing.

While I am not afraid to spend the money when I have it to purchase
"nicer" stuff, in return I expect a certain durability, and with good
fly lines approaching the cost of a low end fly rods, I expect the damn
things to last several years.

It s getting toward the end of the season and yesterday I was
fishing the other end of a Double taper line. I m hard on lines. And
the these "reetchy" sounds were coming off the rod as the line past
thru the guides. Almost like there was ice in the guides tho it was
50 degrees.

Figuring the line needed cleaning I put it in the bath tub today
and realized that it s past cleaning. Ingrained dirt, some checking
etc. Id like to get another month out of it and buy new line in the
Spring. I had some armoural and I liberally doused it in that. My fly
line dressing having leaked into my tackle bag last month....

As long as it self destructs in the bed of your truck and not out on the
stream leaving bits of brightly (or muted) colored line all over the water
to add to the debris along the bank.
