I happen to like deep water. Our local Lake is 44ft deep at the deepest. The
weedline starts at 10ft. On any cast you may end up with Small or Large
mouth Bass, Walleye, Pike, Muskie, and Perch. Some club members even catch
the occasional Channel cat on a jig and pig around the docks.

I have a 16ft Glastron open bow. I fish more for walleye than bass, but most
of the same tactics work on both species. Comes in handy for staying on the
Little Bay de Noc in spring for the Walleye Opener in May. Dem upper rollers
can be like a rollie coaster, ay der.

Have been telling my partner that I'd really like to learn to fish for
walleye's as I've never caught one intentionally. Will trade bass trip for
wally trip next spring. Have you ever fished the Fox up Elgin way? There's a
ramp there just north of I90, but I've never fished there.

Deep Water Part 1 (walleye fishing)

To me, walleye fishing is not that different than anything else. In the
spring, it is a good bet that I will catch crappie or walleye using the same
techniques. I would suggest finding a good lake that has walleye. Then
talk to the locals about how the fish and more importantly where and depth.

I use several methods for saugeye (the Ohio version of walleye). In Spring
and Fall, we find them in 8 to 15 feet of water. One method is a slip
bobber with a minnow at various depths. This works for walleye or crappie.
I also use an 1/8 oz. jig with a 2" chartreuse grub and jerk that along or
near the bottom. Sometimes, I put on a small piece of nightcrawler or will
use a minnow in place of the grub. I have not been successful in the
summer, but fishing usually slows down for me then anyway.

If you want to drive up to Lake Delavan, WI (right next to Lake Geneva)
during next summer, I'll be glad to take you out. I probably know less than
you about Walleye fishing, but I hear that they drop shot for them a lot.
Lots of walleyes are being caught there, but I certainly don't target them.
Lots of LM and SM bass and Northern to be found, if the W'eyes get boring

OK with me....I'm at Lake Geneva from late May through early September.
Let's do it!!!

When I was 15 or so, ( now 50 years ago! ) one of my buddies was old enough
to drive. We lived at the very North-western edge of Chicago near Harwood
Heights.....He got his dad's car and we rented a cabin on Butte de Morts. We
caught the heck out of northerns ( added a little gold spinner in front of a
small daredevl) and had a heck of a week. God, what great memories those
were.....RichG

OK I've got you both ( Joshual and Chris ) marked as "fishing buddies in
Spring". We'll get together when I head North.

You two, however, might want to catch the Spring whitefish run that used to
occur around Lake Winnebago. I think that was early in March or April????

Rich,

The spring White BASS run occurs usually in April, on the tail of the
walleye spawn. It is totally dependant on water temps, which is based on
whether the spring is a warm or cold one. Whitefish do not inhabit the
Winnebago System. Any of the rivers that run into Lake Winnebago will be
full of white bass once the water temps get above 45 degrees. When I lived
in Fond du Lac, I used to walk down to the Fond du Lac River on my lunch
hour and catch a mess of the tasty little rascals. They are a lot of fun on
an ultralight spinning rod and will hammer a twitched minnow bait, a small
in-line spinner or a jig and grub combination.

I am guessing you are referring to the white bass run ??? It isn't as
significant as it used to be, but stll pretty solid in the early spring.

Chris...I live in Houston, TX except for June, July, and August. Event
though Texas fishing is generally considered very good, I live a couple of
hours from either Salt or decent Freshwater fishing.

When I am up in the "Frozen North" I can fish in twenty minutes. I seem to
catch fish nearly every time I throw a rod in the water in the F.N. I'm
spending a lot more time golfing now that I am "home"....since driving two
hours one way doesn't make for a fun day of fishing anymore. I know I am
spoiled, but I like it!

Fishing seems to be great where YOU (Wisconsin) live much of the year. I
know the winters are long, but it still is location, location,
location.......If you live where you can fish all year long...but live too
far to actually be able to do it...that isn't great either. If the
temperatures are in the high 80's and 90's for six or seven..or eight..
months out of each year, fishing isn't as much fun as it was in Wisconsin
either.
