11th Day, 11th Hour

On this day we celebrate the veterans of our military and honor their
sacrifices. There are those that decry the use of force, one nation against
another. I am one of them, for I believe that if we resort to force, there
have been failures of leadership. Conversely, I am glad that we have that
military as a last resort against despotism and evil.
The military, your military, whether US, UK, Congolese, or Russian, suffers
deprivation and pain in hopes that the civilian will not have to. So today,
put aside the differences of conservative and liberal, Red and Blue. Say
thanks to a veteran. Remember those who've gone before, making the ultimate
sacrifice and pray for a day when global will creates no more veterans.

Thanks to ALL the other veterans and active military ? Or just the ones
from the US of A ?

Leave it to the good old USA to turn Armistice Day, a worldwide
celebration of global peace, into something else entirely.

In Canada, and I think all of the Commonwealth countries, it is called
Remembrance Day, and is a day to reflect on the sacrifices of those
killed in all wars and conflicts.

In the US we honor dead US veterans on Memorial Day, nee Decoration
Day, the last Monday in May. Armistice Day was changed to Veterans
Day to honor all US veterans living and dead.

The use of poppies stems from a poem written by a Canadian WWI doctor,
John McCrae.

Here's a link describing the poem and it's circumstance.

I'm reminded of some lyrics, penned by Eric Bogle and entitled "And the Band Played
Waltzing Matilda". While one should grasp the overall sense (lyrics at
http://celtic-lyrics.com/lyrics/36 ), one stanza offers an interesting retrospective:

Now every April I sit on my porch
And I watch the parade pass before me
I see my old comrades, how proudly they march
Renewing their dreams of past glories
I see the old men all tired, stiff and worn
Those weary old heroes of a forgotten war
And the young people ask "What are they marching for?"
And I ask myself the same question

I also wonder, but not about "the same question". Among all of us, there are those
who will step into peril, urged, pushed or willingly, and those of us in sufficiently
secure circumstances will critique their actions. I find myself among those in the
latter category who list themselves as appreciative and humbled.

When I was a teenager, I never thought that "I could know too much", but I was wrong.

Thanks to all who have permitted circumstances such that I could get to this point in
my own "ascent of man" and recognize that I've not done enough.
