MESSAGE NO LONGER AVAILABLE for me to read too often

Often when I click on the most recent unread message, I get a red flag, a
line through the title, and a message saying that that post is no longer
available on the server. Is anyone else having this problem? Is this a
problem with my computer, or are a lot of posts being deleted by someone?

The problem is with your server.

Your ISP probably doesn't care enough about news to allot server space
(which costs them) to it. You could email them and ask them what
their retention is and ask if they can increase it for the groups you
read. If they tell you that's not possible, read it more as that they
don't want to and find another Internet provider. Or sign up with one
of the for pay news services.

....it's a server-side problem. Google up free news servers, some have
good retention rates. There is a free german news server that is a good
one, the name escapes me just now.

I use Charter also, and am having the same problem. In fact, today it
says that there are "no items in this view . . ." but when I look at
Google there's a long list of items posted since I last viewed.

Furthermore, even though I've followed Charter's instructions to the
letter after their change of news servers two weeks ago, I still can't
post either replies or new messages.

Probably time to look for a new ISP. Will probably sign up with SBC.

The DSL is good, but SBC's news servers suck - big-time. As always, YMMV.

Yep, but it won't recognize my password for any length of time, even after it has been

They switched news servers? This could eff-up your article list, as different
servers are rarely cohorent wrt article numbers.

You might try deleting one of the groups with which you are having problems
and then add it again and then download all headers for the group. This should
reset your article list, maybe fix your message access problems...

Something to check out if you are using a method(s) other than a BS DSL or
constant DU to get to the server: the BS news server is configured not only to
ask for username and password, but to check that the attempted login is from an
IP address in the range it "likes," supposedly the BS range. If your connection
is dropping and reconnecting or changing IP addys for whatever reason, that
could cause your problem.

What I don't like about this little supposed "security" "feature" is that one
cannot log into the server from non-BS IPs, even with a username and password,
such as when traveling, but it really does nothing for security. And on a
purely "YMMV" note, Lookout Distress might not be the best choice, news- and
mail client wise.

Hope this helps,
R
