It seems that Stan's thyroid got overly excited about the impending
holidays and ran amok, causing his big heart to pitter-pat at a
ridiculously high rate. This landed him in the hospital, where he's been
treated (or mistreated) since last Wednesday. I just spoke to him on the
phone, and he's hopeful he'll be back home by the end of the week. So
it's time for that fine roffian tradition of ultra-camaraderie and
sending of good thoughts, vibrations, prayers, and whatever else floats
your boat.

I, for one, am ****ed that I bought a nice bottle of ruby port to create
the pre-Christmas toast, and my port-drinking buddy is unable to share.
:( That's gratitude for ya. Oh well, there's always the pre-New Years
toast.

Seriously, Stan, get well soon.

And don't let them irradiate your thyroid away or remove it surgically
until you've spent a couple of months checking out all available
information. alt.support-thyroid (or alt.support.thyroid) is a place
with a lot of people who take more interest (because they're the ones
with thyroid problems) than the doctors realize.

Take the meds for your heartbeat problem faithfully and always renew
your prescriptions at least a week in advance. Some doctors will go
weird and cut you off completely when you're supposed to taper off.

And get well soonest.

Thanks for all the good wishes. I'm home, exhausted, but feeling pretty
good.

Bottom line is that I have Graves' disease (autoimmune disorder of the
thyroid) and my thyroid output was 15x normal. The huge amount of T3
hormone put my heart into atrial flutter - which is *very bad*. The heart
and anti-thyroid medicines have me pretty stable - I'm not going to be
running any marathonsg, but can handle normal activity. I should be able
to get past this in a couple of months.

If I had my tying stuff I could have cranked out a dozen dozen flies last
week. Seemingly endless hours of boredom, waiting for the next blood test,
or crappy meal. The hospital tables would make a really good tying table.
Most of the time I was able to sit in a nice cushy recliner with my feet up.
If I had access to beers and a bag of chips, I would have been very happy to
stay there for another week.
