fly fishing gear for my father

my estranged father has recently made a reappearance in my life. he seems
tickled to death that i fish, as he spins. while talking on the phone the
other night, he said that if we are going to be doing any fishing together
he might as well get some fly fishing gear. he likes to fish for trout, but
greatly enjoys fishing for walleye, pike and the like. he is coming for a
visit over christmas and wants to pick up some stuff while he's here. what
do ya'll suggest? any help will be appreciated-

And once he gets a Dell he can post to roff posing as your

Wally now has a two-fer-one sale. That's where he sends you the first
rod, you send that one back, and then he sends the correct one. Worked

The new St Croix Legend Ultra rods are an excellent value, another excellent
value is the G Loomis Adventure reels, Orvis Battenkills, or the Lamson
reels. The quality is good enough in all this stuff that he'll not need to
upgrade later.

Still, they DO provide fertile ground for speculation. I mean, given that
they evidently share a virtually identical herpetological fantasy, one has
to wonder how large a part each plays in the other's. Fortunately for those
of us with delicate psychic constitutions, neither of them (as they have
amply demonstrated time and again......this thread not excluded) has
anything to say......and thus, we will never know. :)

- so in the spirit of the season-kiss my ass ;-)

It's kind of fun, isn't it, to watch a bunch of people who loathe one
another (not without reason) and who frequently and with undeniable
justification berate one another for hypocrisy (among other things),
pretending to wish one another a happy holiday season?

Wolfgang

Snake, I'd pivot and go in another direction, if I wuz you. I'd ask long
removed dad to go fishing with me and see if he wuz man enough to use my fly
fishing equipment. Seems to me you and Pops have a lot of catching up to
do and he don't need to buy fly fishing equipment to do that. And just for
ho hos if he was in a post-Christmas spendy frame of mind, I'd have a
back-up local guide standing by to take BOTH of you fly fishing and see if
good ole dad can be taught how to fly fish and catch something. Hopefully
your guide can find some place warm enough to fish.

You just might get more mileage out of having dad use the guide's equipment
and then recommending what he should buy. My guess is if dad is willing to
pony up the guide's fee, he'll seriously listen to what was said - not only
from the guide but you too! And this approach will let you test if good ole
dad really wants to reappear in your life or is just passing through.

What ever you decide to do, have good luck and a Merry Christmas!

Well, geez, if you really needed some input, why didn't you just say
so...of course I'd be glad to help.

Since you and your father have been estranged, I'd think something by
Sage would be appropriate, but only if the estrangement was mutual. If
you didn't want the estrangement, but he did, then the Sage would still
be appropriate, but only in a 4, 5, or 8. If he didn't want the
estrangement, but you did, then a Sage would be a poor choice, and a TFO
or a Winston (but only in 5, 6, or 8) would be the only rational
choices. Now, if his reappearance appears to be permanent, then forgot
about 5s and 8s, as you will have to stick to either a 4 or 6, but if
his reappearance is temporary, I believe the rule is 3s, 5s, and
fast-action 7s. And don't forget to remind him of a cardinal rule of
fishing (fly or otherwise): if you intend to fish with drama queens,
think twice.

Hope THIS helps,
Dickie or Richy or whatever...

You just might get more mileage out of having dad use the guide's equipment and then
recommending what he should buy. My guess is if dad is willing to pony up the
guide's fee, he'll seriously listen to what was said - not only from the guide but
you too! And this approach will let you test if good ole dad really wants to
reappear in your life or is just passing through.

What ever you decide to do, have good luck and a Merry Christmas!
John

Best advice I've heard so far!

Unless he shows some inclination to really good gear, and / or likes
to blow away money, there's nothing wrong with getting a KPOS to
start. Then he's not out much if he decides he doesn't like it. 5/6
weight would probably be the most versatile for a combination of trout
and bass and panfish, though probably not heavy enough for pike or
walleye (if walleye will even come up to take flies).

Good luck on the reconciliation.

Good luck patching up the relationship with your dad.

As far a gear goes, a quick stop at WalMart would set him up for under
$100, including the license, assuming that you have the flies.

Hi Snake,

He could get a standard 9' #5 or 6 line outfit for the lighter stuff now and
then get a larger #7-8 weight rig for those bigger fish and bigger fliers
later?

He might need a casting lesson? You might be able to hire a local fly
fishing guide/instructor to spend a day with you guys or hire a person out
of one of the local fly shops to give you and your day some instruction.

You need to get you dad to a place in the next summer where he can easily
catch some fish on a fly rod or he might just go back to spinning for them.

Get him to take you to Montana, British Columbia or ever Alaska next summer?

A Dell - maybe you two can get reacquainted while posting silly-assed
trolls together...

Hope th...well, you know,
Dickie or Richie or whatever
...remember, you did say _any help_ would be appreciated...

yeah, with *help* being the operative word.......
anyway, it's christmas, i just finished another extremely successful
semester, and have a few other very nice things happening right now and
nothing you or forty can say could possibly bother me- so in the spirit of
the season-
kiss my ass ;-)

Hope THIS helps,
Dickie or Richy or whatever...

jesus man-
you have entirely too much time on your hands.....

Snake, I'd pivot and go in another direction, if I wuz you. I'd ask long
removed dad to go fishing with me and see if he wuz man enough to use my
fly fishing equipment. Seems to me you and Pops have a lot of catching
up to do and he don't need to buy fly fishing equipment to do that. And
just for ho hos if he was in a post-Christmas spendy frame of mind, I'd
have a back-up local guide standing by to take BOTH of you fly fishing and
see if good ole dad can be taught how to fly fish and catch something.
Hopefully your guide can find some place warm enough to fish.

sounds like a great idea, john, however there won't be time for that this
visit. on the flip side, he lives in colorado, and i'm thinking that would
be a great place to do just what you suggest come spring.
