Fishing Around Boise ID

I may have an opportunity to visit Idaho, near Boise. I was
wondering if anyone could advise me as to fly fishing possibilities
there. I know that in the northern part of the state there are many
good places. I was wondering about the Boise/Nampa area.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Gene,

On previous bidness trips to Boise, a friend of mine has taken me to both
the Owhyee River and the Middle Fork of the Boise. The Owhyee is just across
the state line into Oregon just west of Nampa. The Middle Fork is about an
hour's drive east of Boise. Perhaps some more local person can help. Also,
check with the Boise Angler flyshop in downtown Boise.

Good luck,
Danl

Are you sure that wasn't the South Fork below Anderson Ranch Dam, Danl?

Whoopsie! Thanks for the correction, r-dub. Gene, listen to the local
fellow. My mind is still in Carolina.

The South Fork of the Boise has some BIG rainbows. You have to time it
right to avoid high water from the discharge from Anderson Ranch Dam.
It's the only river I've ever fished where the Pink Albert was the go-to
dry fly (mid summer).

I've heard that the river above the dam is also good, but I've never
tried it. It's on my ever-expanding list.

BTW, I'm not "local" to Boise. Boise is 120 miles and 2 1/2 hours away,
in good weather. The only homebrew store in Boise recently went out of
business, so I have little reason to travel there, except to buy guns. :-)

I fished the South fork of the Boise Dec. 30th (visiting wife's in-laws and
took advantage of one day away with my cousin). Had a couple hookups
sub-surface, but no fish to hand. I didn't see any fish rising, however it
was cold and snowing.

It's possible to book a guide for a raft trip on the South Fork. This is
the way to go if the water is high. I've never done it so I don't have a
contact.

Gene,
The best fishing in the area is the South Fork of the Boise. It is about
a 2 to 3 hour drive from Boise because of a circuitous route you have to
take. (BTW you CAN fish the Middle Fork too). And you can fish right
here in town. The Boise River in the Barber Park area is usually a good
place to try. They do stock the river with trout and with steelhead.

The best contact here is the Idaho Angler flyshop: www.idahoangler.com
The fly shop is easy to get to from the airport or other parts of town.
The weather here isn't what I would call friendly right now. The high
today was 27 and the low tonight is going to be in the teens. And it is
a LOT colder up on the South Fork. Trout season is officially closed but
you can still catch trout on the South Fork catch-and-release only.
There are also a lot of whitefish in that fishery as well.

Our local club (of which I am a member) is the Boise Valley Fly
Fishermen (see www.bvff.com) if you are interested.

Be prepared to break the ice outta yer guides and have a great visit!

I read an article in the Idaho Statesman not long ago that reported on a
electroshock survey of the Boise River, right in town. It seems that
there are quite a few very large trout, but they are seldom caught.

I observed that too! And I was amazed at the high number of large browns
in the river as well as some steelhead that were never landed. It is
close and that makes fishing in town attractive with the days being
short and darkness coming early.
