Opening of the ski season. :-)

One guess: might be move-in weekend at Northern Michigan University?

Did you book flights? Maybe try the next week, the 16th through the 23rd?
There'll be the beginnings of fall color I'd guess by then.

i'll wait til sept to decide on car and hotel... but, as i recall,

You are correct sir. Not much in that stretch. Maybe check Ishpeming (see
I TOLD you we should have bought that "house" someone posted a month or so
ago) or L'Anse. I like that town, and it is of fair size. For da Yoop.
Can't recall, but there should be some kind of lodging there. And of course
I'd talked about fishing the Skanee area, which would be easy access from
L'Anse.

Another option: you don't necessarily have to head west immediately on
arriving in Marquette. If I came up the first weekend you fly in, you could
head east and we could rendezvous on the Fox (Seney, maybe an hour east of
Marquette), then head west from there (I'll be coming from over The Bridge).
Just a thought.

so bill...bring an extra tent g

Yessir!

Whatever the decision, I'd likely be doing a five day weekend for the
expedition.

Hmmm. Mapquest says more like two hours from Marquette to Seney...

Just so we can deal (at least in a preliminary fashion) with all the issues,
I'll reinsert Jeff's queries and concerns:

"wolfgang, bill... um, what's the deal with sept 9 in marquette? no

If I'm not mistaken, Jeff had already set his mind on entering the U.P. via
the airport at Marquette so the transportation you offer, while appreciated
all around, won't be necessary.

Jeff.....

I suspect that Marquette being what and where it is, outfits like Expedia
probably overlook some of what they might consider.....um.....obscure
lodgings. :)

The itinerary doesn't make much difference to me (though I WILL have some of
what I hope to be interesting possibilities to suggest over the next couple
of months), but if I've understood you right, you were interested in
exploring a bit further east than the last time you visited......more in
Voelker's old neighborhood. If this is the case, then lodging bewtween
Marquette and Occidenta.....um....Ontologica...uh....****, now you've got ME
doing it! :(

Anyway, you want to be looking in the other direction. I did a bit of
checking today and found a number of websites that should help. The first,
"Towns and Cities of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan" includes links to all
of the others that follow. I included it in case you wanted to explore a
bit further afield. The other links in turn, all have links to
accomodations in their respective areas. As you will see, they include a
wide range of lodges, motels, campgrounds, etc. You might want to take a
look at others links which will take you to various attractions in the
region.

Ishpeming, Escanaba-Gladstone, Manistique and Munising are all within about
an hour and a half drive of Marquette. Seney and Newberry are considerably
further, but put you much closer to the environs of the Two Hearted and the
Fox......both of which I assume are on the menu.

http://www.exploringthenorth.com/townsmi/townsmi.html
http://www.exploringthenorth.com/ishpeming/ish.html
http://www.exploringthenorth.com/escanaba/lodging.html

http://www.exploringthenorth.com/munising/home.html
http://www.exploringthenorth.com/newberry/home.html
http://www.exploringthenorth.com/seneymi/

And, last but not least, Marquette itself. Marquette is the biggest city in
the U.P. I suspect you'll find things that Expedia missed.

Happy shopping! :)

I'm not exactly an expert on the region- just a handful of trips- but I sure
would vote for some time on the Fox, so long as you don't mind roughing it.
Don't think Seney has much in the way of lodging, though as I recall
Germfask might. But the camping along the Fox is good, and I really like
that river. Wolfgang, from what the books say, the lower Fox (below 28) is
too deep for wading, but holds bigger fish for those who have
watercraft/float tube. And there's that beaver pond in the upper
reaches....

interesting page:

My uncle's camp was located on the Huron River, just west of the Huron
Mountains and the western limit of the HMC holdings. I've often wondered if
one could drive from Skanee to Big Bay/Marquette. According to this page,
it looks like it would be possible, but only under the best conditions and
with a 4WD vehicle.

Man, wish I still had the deed to that camp...

I haven't looked at that page in detail yet, but I DID look at the area on
DeLorme's "Street Atlas". It looks as if the area marked as "Impassable" on
the 1932 map might be what DeLorme calls Northwestern Road. I'm not at all
familiar with this area, but if it's anything like what I'm familiar with in
the far western U.P. it is almost certainly navigable with just about any
vehicle. I know of many roads that show up as "4WD" trails on maps and that
are pretty well maintained. As undeveloped (relatively speaking) as the
U.P. is, it's seeing a lot more tourist traffic these days.....especially
since the snowmobile boom....and the various counties and even individual
townships are taking pretty good care of what used to be strictly logging
roads.

Wolfgang
who, having nursed a desire to fish the huron for several years, has mapped
out every possible road access (to both branches), complete with shortest
route to the river from each access point......AND gps coordinates and
compass directions. :)

autumnal mosquitos are apt to be small and weak, you're apparently a
gourmet item for them.

indeed, i'm apparently delicious fare for all bloodsucking, biting
creatures. must be the vapors.

While one hesitates to suggest that your welcome here is in any way
contingent on the demonstrated fact that you are the only known delicacy
which will actually draw a significant number of the brutes away from your
humble narrator, it sure don't hurt. :)

but, between the biting bugs and the stinging nettles, i've sampled some
interesting experiences in the up...can't wait to do it again.

As noted on the some of the web pages I posted earlier, there are a lot of
available experiences we didn't get around to last time. You might want to
give some consideration to fishing one of the innumerable lakes in the
region......or even THE lake.

and...uh... again...wolf, bill, wayne...have we decided beyond any
suggestion of change which week we're dedicating to my continued education
in all things yooper?

jeff (needing to make plane reservations before the next big gas
surge...including my own.)

Well, since George has said he might get away for a day or two around the
9th, and no one else appears willing to make a decision, I say it's the
9th-17th. Vote early......vote often.

That's the plan as I type it now.

Currently, a sixteen year old minivan with about 200k miles on it. By
September......who knows? But (and trust me on this one), whatever it is,
Wayne's is likely to be the better offering. :)

I believe that we will settle on whichever dates are on your plane ticket.
At least from the thread, that seems to be the, er, driving factor in
picking the week. That and bear season, that is.

I was just thinking about that campground on the north end of the Mason
Tract, Wayne. Gonna be tough to keep heading north as I pass Grayling...
Though maybe if we use that as our rendezvous point in June...

Anyhow, once the week is chosen, we can start seriously planning the drunken
booze fest that all claves become. :-)

Hi Jeff,
Reference wrong planes. :) I've only seen it once. Maybe I've mentioned it
before around here, but I chuckle everytime I recall the event. I was
coming back from Thailand after doing some fly tying business "stuff" for a
few weeks. Flew into Minneapolis for my next connection. They changed
gates for the flight to Denver, while I was just hanging around. Went to
the new gate, and when I got on the plane, somebody was in my seat.
Politely showed him my ticket, and said he may be in the wrong seat. He
showed me his ticket, and sure 'nuff, same seat. So I just sat down beside
him, and indicated we'd sort it out if there became too many people. So we
took off heading for Denver, with the usual casual chatting happening along
the way. (uhh . . .I fly coach class . . . sometimes folks talk . . .and
since I had been hearing the Thai language mostly for several weeks. . . we
started talking about nothing much . . .what he did, what I did . . .blah,
blah.
About halfway through the flight I mentioned it would be great getting back
to Denver again. He got this strange look on his face . . .and said
"Denver"? Apparently he was going to Chicago. So we looked at tickets
again. And we certainly had the same seat designation, but his indicated he
was on a different flight going to a different location.
It became a bit fun after that. Of course the other passengers around kind
of picked up on this after the loud laughing kind of sound coming from my
face.
He was going to some kind of trade show. I suggested he tell a stewardess
about the confusion to see if he could get a return flight to meet his
schedule. He didn't want to do so . . .so I told him how he would enjoy
Denver and the mountains. Then we got close to Denver International Airport
(DIA) (there ain't any mountains there . . . they are westerly from there)
Clouds had come in so you could see no mountains at all.
Now it was insult to injury for the flight confusion. He wasn't going to
Chicago, and he couldn't see any mountains. I told him, that heck they were
there when I left a few weeks ago . . can't imagine what happened to them .
.. .they must just be gone. Of course, passengers in close proximity were
sorta having fun too a this point.
But good news is he got linked up to fly back to Chicago from Denver, by way
of Minneapolis going west first.

Denver
( uhh . . . and then there was the time I was coming back from Thailand .
.. .and the airport clerk in Bangkok, when I checked in, asked if I was going
to the US. I said yes and then she said Hong Kong, which was my connecting
flight. I said yes . . .heh . . .heh . .my destination became Hong Kong.
Got an extra 24 hours in Hong Kong before I could get back. . . but . . .but
I was on the right plane . . .it is those silly connection things that seem
to slow down those silly custom folks when I have to go customs again, and
recheck. . .and miss a flight because they wouldn't let anybody check in
less than 45 minutes before departure. Got some fun pics of the area close
to the airport hotel though. Kinda looked like Thailand . . .and these
folks seem to also speak a different language or somethin'. :) than Thai,
which I didn't understand mostly anyway . . .hmm . . . apparently I have a
pattern . . . had the same problem with Korean) But I could fish in Korea.
.. .sometimes.
