fly fishing in AZ
I will be heading to AZ for the next 3 months and was wondering if there are
very many good fly fishing opportunities there. I will be mainly in Tucson, but should have the chance to travel throughout the state. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dustin |

Arizona is a complete freakin' wasteland. Indeed. Imagine someone thinking they could find waters to flyfish in that stinking desert. Chuck Vance (the mind boggles) |

The resident wisenheimers are giving you a hard time because just a few threads up the list is a Trip Report (TR) from Sedona, AZ. Look for the Subject: Semi-OT: Sedona TR (with pics). I believe there are also some tailwaters that hold trout and there's always warmwater fishing. We spent a week in Sedona one fall a few years ago before riding down into the Grand Canyon on mules. I didn't have a fly rod along but the best trout water I saw on the whole trip was running right alongside Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. -- Ken Fortenberry |

Gee, did you have to ruin the thread by being heplful? ;-) Well since you started it, here's a page that should get him pointed in the right direction: http://www.gf.state.az.us/h_f/edits/..._fishing.shtml Chuck Vance (btw, that's *Mr.* Wisenheimer to you) |

I could have said one's a dumbass, yuppie beer snob and the other one's worse, a republican, but I'm in a generous and gregarious mood this morning. ;-) Actually, for high desert fishing in the Southwest I recommend New Mexico. Sedona was just too crystal, vortex, New Age, pink jeep, cute and crowded for my taste. I don't like to vacation where traffic jams are commonplace. It was nice enough but we won't be going back. Taos, New Mexico, on the other hand ... well, never mind ... there are no trout around Taos. ;-) -- Ken Fortenberry |

And no Mexican food either! Okay, now you're getting downright evil. -- Frank Reid Euthenize to respond |

He was making fun of *you* calling us out because we were being smartasses. The irony-meters were pegging all across ROFF on that one. I can't really disagree with you on the vortex, etc. I was talking with some of the locals, and it's gotten so expensive to live there that the "real" Sedona residents have been driven out by the damyankee Birky-wearing, sprout-eating, wine-drinking snobs. But then again, for me Sedona is really just a jumping-off-place for exploring the area. Chuck Vance |

Last time I checked, the Flagstaff, Prescott, and Prescott Valley areas are still affordable, although Prescott is getting up there. Sedona and the immediate areas are high, but if you have money, whatever you buy, property wise, becomes a decent investment. -- TL, Tim ------------------------ http://css.sbcma.com/timj |

I'd be worried if he and I agreed on anything regarding beer, other than it's wet and goes down well after a day of hiking and fishing. :-) I can't really disagree with you on the vortex, etc. I was talking with some of the locals, and it's gotten so expensive to live there that the "real" Sedona residents have been driven out by the damyankee Birky-wearing, sprout-eating, wine-drinking snobs. Yeah, it's an investment, but if you want to live there, you'd better be getting pretty good money from elsehwere, as according to the guy who owned the place where we were staying, the cost-of-living has been going up ~25% each of the last few years. From the looks of Flagstaff, I'd say you could still buy cheaply there. Chuck Vance |

A yuppie beer snob sips effette, expensive, fancy beers and talks pretentiously about beer the way an oenophile prattles on about wine. A dumbass, yuppie beer snob, DYBS, does all of the above while at the same time denigrating the most popular beer in America as "swill" and demeaning the millions of folks who drink it as "riffraff." Yuppie beer snobs are kind of cute in their own precious way, DYBS on the other hand are pricks. ... A dumbass, yuppie beer snob, DYBS, does all of the above while at the same time denigrating the most popular beer in America as "swill" and demeaning the millions of folks who drink it as "riffraff." Oh, I was just yanking your chain, Ken. (And it's *so* easy to do.) BTW, since when did popularity have anything to do with quality? Yuppie beer snobs are kind of cute in their own precious way, DYBS on the other hand are pricks. Like self-admitted pretentious, elitist, dry-fly snobs who dismiss Nawth Cackalacky restaurants as having "pedestrian" wine-lists? ... Thanks, Dustin Try the White Mountains in northeast, either around (east) or on the Apache Reservation. There is (or was when I was there) small mouth bass in the streams and rivers above Roosevelt Reservoir (Salt River), such as the Black and White Rivers. Check with the Tribe for fishing permits. By the way don't think the stream/river water is pristine, it's not, filter and/or purify it. It is beautiful country, but the white faced elk like standing in the streams and rivers, and especially love standing on roads (driver carefully). Good luck. --Scott-- |
