A thought on strategy for Penn's Clavers - The Green Drake Jamboree
 

Thinking it may be best to travel in packs over the weekend/s especially for
the main event at dusk. It will be crowded over the holiday weekend if it
is peak hatch time, even if it isn't really, so I'm thinking the best
approach would be to do big group fishing events where we can take over a
stretch between us. If were going to fish with the crowds it may as well
happens with Roffians on either side of us as we watch in awe.

Thinking somewhere between the Coburn Trestle and Three Streamer Stans on
Saturday Night. Not a bad idea to pack in a grill or two if you're
carrying. Settle in mid-late afternoon, fill up the parking and have a
Green Drake Jamboree

Anyone game?

Drake madness.

A good point. That first night, if the drake is up into Coburn I'm sure
they'll all want to see what we've been talking about, but it's a good time
to hit the other pristine water too. I think it really depends where the
drake is. If it's peak, you have to at least dedicate some time to the main
event.

I am going to bring alot of quarters and sell them 3 for a

Yeah, whatever everyone is in to, I agree.

The plan is I'll be meeting up with Bruce on Thursday night, he's not
getting in until hatch time. I'll be getting wet as close to dawn as
possible myself.

Those monster drakes could care less if there is a drought, and as long as
the drakes are flopping on the surface, the big girls will be willing to
come out for a dance. The big difference may be the timing, which is why
I'm guessing earlier this year. Some think the opposite, so it's a wait and
see thing. Don't think we'll be too late, so we have a very above average
chance to catch it peak somewhere along our normal range.

Once you get into mid/late June and if we still haven't had much water than
you have to start worrying about mortality rates. In a big creek like
Penn's many fish survive year to year droughts. We just got through the 5-7
year droughts in 2003 and as you know there is a ton of fish around.

During a drought we have found that the further downstream you go, the more
of a chance that the fish have migrated either into the feeders, or
upstream. That's probably why we saw such an increase in fish population in
Weikert Run a few years back, we had so many years of drought, they made the
cooler feeder home.

If you go up to Big Pine, and other freestone streams, then you have to
start worrying about the affects of a drought as they get hot in mid-summer
if the depth is below average.
