I received my new 7' medium baitcaster from Steve today - in two
words,OH MY! Beautiful workmanship; I cannot be more pleased. So, if
you want to spoil yourself, I highly recommend Steve as your rod
builder! I was really impressed with the bomb-proof tube he sent it
in!

That Bomb-Proof tube is the cardboard roll that I pick up from carpet
stores. They appreciate me, because they don't have to fill their
dumpsters, and I appreciate it because I get decent rod tubes for shipping.

As heavy duty as those tubes are though, they have been smashed in transit!
I can't imagine the forces involved for that.....

You must be extremely lucky if you are using cardboard
tubes ,Steve. I use schedule 40 PVC and still had UPS
snap the tip off a rod last week . Go figure, at least I do insure them!

It's tubing that has wall thickness approximately 1/4" thick. I can stand
on it without crushing the tube and I weigh 200 pounds. I figure that if I
can't crush it, insurance can cover the risk. I've shipped literally
hundreds of rods this way and so far, it's been all right. Only two rods
broken so far, and those were both done by UPS.

I started shipping via the U.S. Post Office after I found out from my
brother in law (a UPS employee) that UPS is the largest single purchaser of
St. Croix rods in the world. That's right, UPS buys more St. Croix rods
than BassPro, Cabela's, or Gander Mountain, only they buy the rods in
pieces. I won't use UPS any longer for shipping rods.

I insure the rods heavily, package them well and let insurance cover the
rest. Besides, the shipping costs are less and they get there, for the most
part, in the same amount of time, and more importantly, intact.

That's gotta be some serious manhandling to snap PVC like that...maybe
it was driven over by a Big Brown truck? (Apologies to anyone here who
works for UPS)

The tube had been opened from both ends, they somehow managed to snap off
the 1st 4" of the rod.They had the gall to ask if it could be repaired.

In ten yrs. of shipping rods across the U.S. this is the 1st to come back in
pieces. Can't believe UPS is being so ignorant about it . They broke it, and
it's insured .Case closed in my book.If they weren't so convenient I might
seek an alternative shipper.

As to their being the #1 purchaser of St. Croix rods, show me the figures.
No shipper could stand those loses and stay in business.

pipe to duplicate it with PVC, and the weight would be WAY more. I used

UPS doesn't pay claims on insured items. They contract out an insurance
company. Rods probably account for a tiny percentage of one percent of UPS'
shipping load, and only a tiny fraction of the rods they ship are broken in
transit. Capice?
