Nipping braided line
After reading about the benefits of braided lines for the past couple of years, I decided to put a spool on my baitcaster - Stren 40lb. One thing I noted right off the bat is you just can't cut this stuff with standard nippers. Even good scissors have difficulty. What do you guys use? Thanks, Dick |
Gerber's Braided Fishing Line Scissor's work good, about 3 bucks.

The scissors on my Leatherman Wave usually does the job. I also picked up a
couple surgical scissors from the big table of stainless and medical instruments that I've seen at several fishing shows over the winter. These tools are mainly made in Pakistan, and some of the stainless steel is the old style stuff that won't keep a good edge, but if you rummage through, you can find good, sharp, sturdy scissors for just three or four dollars. Yep, the little round nosed ones for $1.79 @ X-Mart. I keep them attached to a litle pin-on retractor. Some of the best money I ever spent. Thanks, Dick I use the scissors on my mini-leatherman. But several guys I know swear by KIDS Fiskars available at walmart and the like for a few bucks. Round nosed, so you can keep 'em in your pocket, and amazingly, they cut superline pretty well. |

I have been going through 2 or 3 clippers a month. The first few cuts are great, after that is just makes a depression in the braid :-). I have my berkley braid scissors, and they work alright, but what i would give for a nice clean cut on that stuff! Chris |
I'm in total agreement with Harry. I've bought all kinds of different
scissors, only to be made a believer in the Fiskars. I think I bought mine at OfficeMax for $2.00. "Thundercat" wrote in message ... And with my Benchmade, I have field dressed wild turkeys, deer, black bear, skinned and quartered two caribou. Plus, I can open cardboard boxes and pick my teeth with the same tool, can you do that with your kiddy scissors? :-) -- Steve @ OutdoorFrontiers http://www.outdoorfrontiers.com G & S Guide Service and Custom Rods http://www.herefishyfishy.com |
Get ready for this....for $1.00 at the local buck or two store......10 "milk
bag cutters".......you gotta love it! And you will!! A little razor blade in a plastic handle. Put one at each corner of your boat, in a pocket and you will still have some left over, they even go through the wash pretty good too! You can even laugh when you see it go overboard to the bottom! -- Steve |
Sounds like one of those old Herter's knives, you could skin a elephant
and then shave.. |

I have a couple pair on-board at any given time. A heavier duty version of some Fiskar's yard/shop scissors, and a Gerber brand 2.5-3" folding blade that has a set of scissors built-in. Or you can use a razor sharp knife or single edged razor-type of knife (one of these folding knife like box cutters that are hanging all over the home improvement warehouse stores). But usually, I just go for a set of scissors. IMO, regular clippers just literally won't cut it anymore. When I have tried them, I ended up with more fray than anything on braids. |

The only way to use scissors with a braided line is to run the line along the blade, rather than closing the scissors in a traditional fashion. It's difficult enough to tie knots in these ever decreasing line sizes and blurring split rings, let alone the fumbling with them tiny Fiskar finger holes :) And a blades width is the perfect tag length, in my worthless opinion. |

LOL! I wouldn't call any opinion wothless, since most are freely offered. Dunno why it is that scissors work so well for me, but they do. A regular snipping action with either pair of mine work just fine. The ones built-into the knife are "lever action" and don't even have finger holes. The other set is regular sized, and my fingers fit ok. Oh, and I do sharpen them fairly often just as I do my knife blades. |
