Any one interested in Bamboo fly rods?
 

Hi,

I have the center section and two tips of a bamboo fly rod. They are
exceptionally straight and are in a I believe Mahogany case.
Any interest?

You don't have a fly rod unless you have all three sections. What
happened to the butt section? I would be surprised if you could find
a buyer for just the middle and tip, but crazier things than that have
happed around here. d;o)

I've fished refurbished 'boo that works quite well. The
builder took the middle and tip of a 3 piece 9' 7wt and
made a 2 piece 6' 4wt out of it. It was a sweet little
piece of 'boo if you like short fly rods.

Also, the "mahogany case" sounds suspiciously like the post WW-II Japanese
'boo rods. In perfect condition, most are worth about 15 to 25 bucks.

Hate to say it Dave, but there are fellows out there who repair fly rods
and two perfect tips alone are worth something. I guess you did not read
that I had the center section and tips. I wasn't trying to fool anyone,
but I guess I fooled you. What I am looking for is a pro refurbisher, or
hobbiest. The wooden case looks to me to be recent home made, more than
Post WWII Japanese.

A typical graphite rod is incomparably better than two pieces of a
three-piece bamboo rod, even if it doesn't come in an authentic mahogany
case.

now a fly rod. It takes three to tango with a three piece boo rod.

My grandfather left me an 8 1/2 foot bamboo rod by "James Heddon's Sons,
Dowagiac, Michigan, Makers of fine bamboo and steel rods". Is this a
known brand, or just some importer? It's more a keepsake than sporting
equipment, but I'm interested in knowing anyway.

Heddon made rods as late at the early 50s but are now out of business.
Your rod could be worth anything from $200 to $1500. Do a Google on
it. There are lots of antique rod buyers/sellers out there. If i
were you, I would refurbish it (if necessary) and fish it.

You're not going to find a "4 weight boo rod" for $15-$25. These rods are
rarely even tonkin cane, but rather local bamboo. They are very heavy and
I've found some that have some really weird twists in the cane that makes
casting really interesting (try casting a rod that has a 20 degree kink to
the 8 o'clock position about 2/3rds the way up the blank). Kinda like a gun
that shoots around corners.
It is possible to find one out of about five that is serviceable. Just go
to ebay and buy every one you find and you might hit a winner. Really fun
checking out the ebay deals on these. I remember one from last year that
the owner thought was worth a minimum of 3000 dollars ("I done heard that
peoples pay an amazing amount of money for these here tomato stakes, so's
I'm gonna get some of that money!").

excellent point across. The problem is that you are doing one of those things
best described with the American expression, "****ing in the wind". This kind
of complaint usually spawns a long series of messages that in the long run have
no effect on the intended party, but leave the rest of us shaking our heads.

You've put forward an excellent effort, but I suspect it's simply beating your
head against a wall.
